Liehuva Hiilihanko kävi Kaivarissa / The Flaming Coal Rake went to the Park

Garderobistani puuttui pitkä, a-linjainen tunika, joka ei olisi hörhelö tai liian painava, muttei myöskään liian teltta. Olen tykästynyt ylhäältä alas -rakenteeseen, kahlannut läpi Barbara G. Walkerin klassikkokirjan Knitting from the Top ja opiskellut etevämmiltäni mitoitusta ja konstruktiotekniikkaa.
My wardrobe has missed a long, a-lined tunic that would not be too ladylike nor too heavy, but neither should it be a tent. I've become fond of the top-down technique and studied Barbara G. Walker's classic Knitting from the Top. I've also made a series of garments designed according to the top-down technique and tried to learn from the experts.

Lontoon-reissulta tarttui mukaan paketillinen Rowanin ihanaa, just-mun-harmaata alpakka-puuvilla-sekoitelankaa. Tästä tulisi kaivattu tunika, päätin, ja aloitin suunnittelutyön. Otin itsestäni kunnon mitat ( = minä komensin, lapsi mittasi). Tein mallitilkkuja. Piirsin. Neuloin. Purin. Neuloin uudestaan.
I couldn't resist Rowan's wonderful Alpaca Cotton that I met in London some time ago just in the perfect shade of dark grey. This would become my long longed tunic, I decided, and started to draft. I took proper measurements of my body (i.e. I stood still and gave orders and my darling child took the measurements). I swatched. I designed. I knitted. I unraveled. I knitted again.

Raglanhiha istuu minulle periaatteessa täydellisesti, mutta otin opikseni ylhäältä alas neulottavien raglanhihaisten puseroiden perusongelmasta. Hihojen alle tulee helposti liikaa väljyyttä, lapaluiden kohdalle tulee usein ihmeelliset pussit, ja rinnanympäryksestä tulee holtiton kun rakenne on yleensä symmetrinen (yhtä paljon silmukoita etu- ja takakappaleella). Noudatin vain mittojani ja neuletiheyttä. Sovitin vähän väliä. Purin jos meni pieleen.
The raglan sleeve works, basically, really fine with my body proportions. I took notice, however, of the usual defects of raglan sleeved pullovers. Usually, you get too much room under the arms,  mysterious pouches near the shoulder blades, and an uncontrolled amount of room around the chest, because the construction usually prefers symmetry to fit (there seems to be always the same amount of stitches on the back and on the front). What I did was that I only followed my measurements and my gauge. I had a frequent fitting session. I unraveled if it seemed to have gone wrong.

Today it is Sunday and the weather is again so lovely, yet there is already autumn in the air. I took my new tunic and my doggies for a walk in the esteemed park in Helsinki city centre. My face and hair are hopeless, I know, but the tunic is pretty nice. And for once, it's exactly as ordered.
