Polttavan vihreää / Stinging green

Noin puolen tunnin saldo: vadillinen
eli noin 8 litraa tuoretta nokkosta.
The result of half-an-hour's work: a bowlful
(c. 8 litres) of fresh nettle leaves.

Toukokuu on mielestäni vuoden parasta aikaa. Melkein parasta keväässä on nokkonen.

The month of May is, in my view, the best time of the year. One of the very best things of spring is the stinging nettle. Because nettles are both healthy, free and delicious, I preach the gospel of nettles and strongly encourage you to at least give it a go. My own nettle paradise is at the country house in the archipelago. Be my guest and take a look at how I did my nettles last week.

Huuhtelua / Rinsing.

Nettles are at their best when they are young. Put on your rubber gloves and go harvesting: I only pick the youngest crowns, but if I need to fo some weeding in the nettle bushes, then I use all the leaves.

Tuoreet nokkoset huuhdellaan reilusti ennen käyttöä. Mukana on aina joku epäonninen toukka, hiekkaa tai muuta roskaa.

Erä no. 1 menossa kattilaan.
Batch #1 going in.
Use plenty of fresh water to rinse your crop. There's always some grit, dust and an unlucky caterpillar hiding amongst the leaves.

Nettles can either be prepared by drying or blanching. My choice is blanching which means that I toss the rinsed leaves in a panful of boiling water and cook them for c. 5 minutes. This time I needed  to work on two batches because my pan was so small.
Viiden minuutin jälkeen nokkoset näyttävät tältä.
After five minutes, your nettles look like this.

Ryöpätyt nokkoset valutetaan, mutta älä heitä keitinvettä pois, se on erinomaista, vahvan ravitsevaa puutarhan kasteluvettä. Kannattaa säästää talteen ja käyttää laimennettuna.

Drain off the cooking water but don't throw it away! It's an excellent, strong and nourishing fertilizer. Save your treasure and use (diluted) in your garden.

Valutusta: vadillinen on
huvennut tuopilliseksi.
Draining the water off:
a bowlful has

My efforts yielded to a fantastic prize: fish of the day à la Villa Maija a.k.a fresh whitefish self-cought from the sea in the morning, some potatoes, asparagus and creamed nettles. Melt a spoonful of butter in a saucepan, add c. 1.5 dl of blanched nettles, roughly worked through with a knife. Simmer for a minute or two, and then add c. 2 dl of thick, heavy cream. Season with salt and black pepper. Simmer gently until the cream thickens itself up. A sinful delicacy!

Toukokuun vihreys on tarttunut myös käsityöjuttuihini. Huomenna 27.5 starttaa Camp Loopy 2012. Tässä on ensimmäisen projektini lankakerät.

The green of May has affected my craft projects as well. Tomorrow, on the 27th of May, I'll go camping at Camp Loopy 2012. Here is my yarn for my first project:

Virettä ja vipinää / Vim and vigour

I have neglected this blog. I have neglected my projects. I have neglected my friends, my work, my house, my garden, just everything. Sometimes, you just fail to achieve everything you should, you would.

In fact, in almost every aspect my recent doings have suffered from halfhearted dutifulness so that making stuff has become plain drudgery. I knitted myself a pair of socks. The pattern was fantastic, the yarn was lovely, but still I felt something, the sense of enjoyable crafting, missing. My yarn diet is still quite successfully on, but that too has given an air of toil and consumption to my knitting that should be about creative making.

Yarn: Cascade Yarns Heritage Silk Paints

Jotain pientä kivaa on kuitenkin syntynyt. Nyt on puikoilla suosikikseni nousseen sukkakirjan, Judy Sumnerin Knitted Socks East and West -kirjan malli Inro.

I have nevertheless managed to get some nice things done. The Arkanoid hat has been in constant use. The model is so funny, the colour is great, and the yarn is as lovely as a yarn should be. Currently, I am knitting a pair of Inro socks from my favourite sock book: Knitted Socks East and West by Judy Sumner. I finished the first one in only three days.

Sitten on tietysti muitakin ilon aiheita, kuten kevään värit ja uudet lankavyyhtini. Istutin orvokkeja tienposkesta löytyneestä kuorma-auton pölykapselista virittämääni piha-amppeliin. Ihailin kallionkolossa jo kukkivia keto-orvokkeja. Katselen hellästi suomalaisen Woolgreyn tuottamaa Alku-kainuunharmasta, jota ostin kaksi vyyhtiä sävyssä Odysseus. Silittelen Pigeonroof Studion Siren Two Sock merinovilla-kashmir-sukkalankaa. Langan sävy on utuinen ametistinsininen Mourning Dove.

Then, of course, there are so many sources of joy such as the colours of spring and my new yummy skeins of yarn. I planted some violets to the hanging basket I fixed up from a truck wheel cover I found by a nearby road. I enjoyd the tiny wild violets that were already blooming in a crack of a rock. I glance tenderly the two skeins of rare Finnish Kainuu grey yarn produced by Woolgrey; the shade is Odysseus. I caress a skein of Siren Two Socks merino cashmir sock yarn by Pigeonroof Studios in a dusty amethystine blue shade labelled Mourning Dove.

Kyllä tämä tästä lähtee taas pikkuhiljaa käyntiin.

I will soon get the my drive on again, don't worry.

Perimmäinen ilo / Fundamental joy

Knitlob's Lair Lace Yarn, Denim
Kuulun siihen ihmisryhmään, joka elää vuodenkiertoa syksystä kevääseen. Menneen ja tulevan vuoden väliin jää omituinen, epämääräisen kelluva kesä. Loma kuuluu palkansaajien sanastoon; minä suhtaudun freelancer-yrittäjänä lomaan vain täydellisen vapauden hetkenä, kesti se sitten kuinka lyhyen tai pitkän ajan hyvänsä

I am one of those who perceive the cycle of a year to flow from autumn to spring. The odd and vaguely hovering summer sets itself in between the two, the past and the coming year. Holiday is word for the employees; as a freelancer and a small business owner, I consider holiday as just a moment of complete freedom, however long or short it may then be.

blooming scillas.
Paijaa koiraa. Huomaa kevään muuttolintu ikkunan edessä olevan puun oksalla. Anna tunnustusta erinomaisuudelle missä ikinä sitä havaitsetkin. Opettele ulkoa laulun sanat. Jaa jotain arvokasta.

Within this framework, I've learned to reduce the sense of joy and control of life to base on very simple things. If the weather is good, take your afternoon coffee in the garden. Cook something good. Pat the dog. Notice the first summer visitors on the tree in front of your window. Salute excellence wherever you come across it. Learn the lyrics of a song by heart. Share something valuable.

This May, I've pretty much managed to live as I preach. Yesterday, I baked the first rhubarb pie of the season. One day, I noticed a Common Redstart on the tree in front of the window of my study. I bought some unique and heavenly wonderful yarn from two Finnish artesans a couple of weeks ago. I met my goddaughter yesterday and introduced her to the art of knitting.

Työn alla / In progress

Seedlings in progress.

The awesome April's here! I've been busy with work even to the extent that work and other stuff have severely begun to interfere with my hobbies. The weather is just wonderful, the chaffinches are singing, and my flower beds are pushing up the very first, delicate sprouts. I should go out and rake the lawn, empty the compost, remove dead branches from the trees, and trim the bushes. At least I have already managed to sow the first seeds: chilies of 4 different varieties, 2 varieties of zucchini, some rosmary and thyme, and even a couple of pots of blue Cathedral Bells (Cobaea Scandens). The Easter concert of my choir, Kaari-Ensemble, is on the horizon as well, and I still have plenty to do with that, too. Soon, it will be Easter, and then it will be the 1st of May, my personal peak of the annual cycle.

Veera Välimäki's Stripe Study Shawl in progress.
Yarn: PukkIlu by Handu
Needles: 3.5 mm
Stripe Study Shawl -huivini on aivan loppumetreillä. Malli on suorastaan nerokas, joskin ainaoikeinneuleen vääntäminen alkaa jo vähän puuduttaa.

When the temperature rises above zero, it suddenly feels rather silly to knit socks and mittens. I've taken on knitting shawls instead; they are relatively fast to knit and believe me, they are useful in Finland also in the summer. At the moment, I'm working on Stripe Study Shawl designed by Veera Välimäki. My version is striped with orange and natural white PukkIlu; a fingering weight, tightly spun 100 % Finnsheep produced as a local speciality by Handu. My Stripe Study only misses a couple of more centimeters of the white border and then it will be finished. The pattern is ingenious in its simplicity, although I'm getting a bit bored slogging away the everlasting garter stitch.

Yum, new yarn! Bulky Merino by Handu
Shade: The Ship Song
Puikot heilumaan, nainen!

Veera Välimäki has many intriguing pattern designs: for example Folded and Celery are on my own to-do-list. I even have the yarn for them. In fact, I feel a bit ashamed. I was supposed to be on a yarn fast and not to buy any more yarn. Get out of here! Somehow my latest credit card bill included yarn purchaces worth of 160 euros! Get your needles clinking, woman!

Maapuhetta / Soil talk

Kevät on myöhässä. Oikein pahasti myöhässä.
Spring is, oh, so late, really badly.

The chilly spring days have even affected my spirits. I've been completely uninspired to grow any seedlings, not even zucchini or flat leef parsley, the two cornerstones of my kitchen garden. Last year, and to my great surprise, my zucchinis were a great success (I grow them mostly for their flowers which are, when deep-fried, the summer treat no 1). The flat leaf parsley was also very productive. I dried two whole boxfuls of leaves 0,5 liters each for the winter. Oh well, this year I must put my reliance to commercial plants and the plant market organised by the Association of Useful Plants at Annala. Unless the parsleys have survived the winter and pop up from the soil in the next few days. I don't think so, the winter was long and cold.

I haven't been complete lazy, however. I persuaded my better half to build me a new herb crib into which I immeadiately transferred my perennial herbs: lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), Russian tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus var. cultivar), hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis) and chives (Allium schoenoprasum) which I divided into 6 small plants. The mints are wakening up in the old crib, lovage looks purky as well, and rhubarb gave its first harvest on the Mothers' Day on May 9th in the form of a lovely rhubarb and meringue pie. I also planted some red onion and Jerusalem artichoke, sowed runner bean (Phaseolus coccineus, 'Celebration'), faba bean (Vicia faba, 'Witkiem'), golden tickseed (Coreopsis tinctoria) for dyeing, and two rows of mangold (Beta vulgaris var. vulgaris, 'Bright lights'). This week, I still have to make to the garden centre for pot marigold (Calendula officinalis), cress (Tropaeolum majus), coriander (Coriandrum sativum) and rocket (Eruca sativa) seeds. And, indeed, the flat leaf parsley seeds: let's try to sow them directly without growing the seedlings first.

Puikkorintamallakin olen ahkeroinut. Ihana Vaila-villapaitani tuli valmiiksi (malli: Gudrun Johnston, Twist Collective Winter 2008, lanka: Malabrigo Worsted, sävy Burgundy). Eipähän palele.
My precious few achievements also include finishing the awesome Vaila sweater (pattern: Gudrun Johnston, published in Twist Collective Winter 2008, yarn: Malabrigo Worsted in shade Burgundy). No more chilly days for me.
