Camp Loopy 2012 edistyy hienosti. Brainless-sukkien kantapäät on nyt käännetty, edessä on mukava loppusuora. Uskomaton istuvuus näillä sukilla, näistä tulee aivan täydelliset! Sukkamallin nimikin istuu hyvin Camp Loopyn ideaan. Eihän virtuaalisessa neulontaleirissä ole kerrassaan mitään järkeä. Juuri siksi leirineulominen on niin tavattoman hauskaa.

My Camp Loopy 2012 is in good progress. The heels of the Brainless socks have now been turned, and I've entered on the nice home stretch. These socks could not fit me better, they will be just perfect! The name of the pattern is very fitting as well. The idea of a virtual knitting camp doesn't make any sense. That is why it is so much fun!

Muitakin haasteita tuli eteen, neulova nettiystäväni Altocumulus esitti joukon melkoisen isoja kysymyksiä. Se ei pelaa joka pelkää, vastaan minä. Alla vastauksiani.

Besides Camp Loopy, I've been set another challenge by my knitting friend Altocumulus from the internet who posed a series of big questions about knitting, hobbies and blogging. There is a Finnish proverb 'the one who fears cannot play' which comes close to the English saying 'no pain no gain'. So, here are my replies:


1. Mitä muuta harrastat käsitöiden lisäksi?

Minun on vaikeaa määritellä harrastaminen. Elämäni ei jakaudu työ- ja vapaa-aikaan, vaan kaikki menee lomittain. Jos ajattelen harrastukseksi sellaisen tekemisen, jota teen tai seuraan, joihin tykkään paneutua palkatta omaksi ilokseni tai joiden parissa rentoudun, niin silloin harrastuksiani ovat musiikki, teatteri, kirjallisuus, elokuvat, puutarhanhoito, seurapelit, luonnossa patikointi, ruoka ja viinit.

1. Do you have any other hobbies besides crafting?

I find it very hard to define a hobby. I cannot make a distinction between work and leisure in my life; it's all so very mixed up. If we speak of a hobby as something that I like to do, make, or follow without any compensation, just for fun or relaxation, then my hobbies are: music, theatre, literature, films, gardening, board and card games, hiking, food and wine.

2. Neulotko ympäri vuoden vai onko neulominen kausittaista? 

Sekä että. Neulon ympäri vuoden, mutta joskus tulee kausia, kun neulominen ei vain huvita. Sitten sitä taas innostuu jostain jutusta ja taas puikot kilisevät, eikä tällä ole mitään yhteyttä vuodenaikoihin vaan ihan vaan fiiliksiin.

2. Do you knit year round or seasonally?

Both and. I knit year round, but there are moments when knitting just sucks. Then I get excited about something, and start knitting again. This has nothing to do with seasons but feelings.

3. Ostatko lankaa suunnitelmallisesti tiettyyn projektiin, vai innostuksen mukaan vai vaikuttaako Vilenismi eli tarjoukset ostopäätökseesi?

Aijai, osuipa arkaan paikkaan. Olen pitkään pyristellyt irti lankahamstrauksesta. Lankalaarini pursuivat jo yli äyräiden, ja keriä kertyi nimenomaan lankakauppojen tarjouslaareista ja erilaisista ihanista klubeista ja nettikaupoista. Nyt olen jo pari vuotta ollut mukana Ravelryn Lankalaatikko-ryhmässä hakemassa ja antamassa tsemppiä lankavaraston jalostukseen ja hamstrausvietin hallintaan. Nyt menee hyvin, ja nykyisin ostan lankaa pääasiassa vain tiettyy projektiin. Joitakin erikoislankoja on parempi hankkia kalliiden postikulujen takia vähän etukäteen varastoon. Rapakon takaa tuo sukkieni Buggakin on peräisin.

3. When you buy yarn, do you buy it according to your project plans or on the basis of plain enthusiasm? Do yarn sales affect your decisions to buy?

Ah, this is a sensitive issue! I've really struggled with stash busting, or should I say, yarn hoarding. It was a problem, and its roots were in particular in the yarn sales and in the fantastic yarn clubs and other treats in net stores. For the last year or two, I've been a member in a Finnish-speaking Lankalaatikko stash busting group in Ravelry. We give and get support to control our stash and enjoy what we already have. It's been really helpful, and great fun too. Now, my stash is in a much better state. Currently, I try to buy yarn only for a specific project with the exception of some specialities. Sometimes the postage costs are so big that it's wiser to by some skeins in advance. That's, for example, how I got my Bugga from the US.

4. Ostatko yleensä pieniä määriä lankaa vai kerralla takkilangoiksi asti?

Yleensä ostan vain 1-2 vyyhtiä, sen verran että riittää sukkiin, huiviin tai muihin asusteisiin. Pieniä töitä tulee tehtyä enemmän. 

4. Do you usually buy small or large quantities of yarn?

I usually by only 1 or 2 skeins, enough yarn for a pair of socks, a shawl or another accessory piece. I knit smaller projects more than bigger ones.

5. Miksi bloggaat?

Koska kuvittelen, että koko maailma on kiinnostunut minun fantastisista käsityötuotoksistani... ;-) Ei vaiskaan. Bloggaan, koska a) se tarjoaa hyvää käytännön kirjoitusharjoitusta, kun kirjoittaminen kuitenkin on leipäpuuni; b) bloggaaminen on upea työkalu uusien oppien ja oivallusten jakamiseen; c) blogi on tosi hyvä muistiinpanoväline. 

5. Why do you blog?

I blog because I think that the whole world is just dying to see my fantastic knitting projects... ;-) Just kidding, I blog because a) it's good practice for writing which I do for living; b) it gives a tremendous opportunity to share something I have learned; c) it acts as a very good notebook.

6. Näytätkö kuvissa omat/lastesi kasvot? Miksi/miksi et?

Näytän oman naamani, jos kuva ei ole ihan kamala. Mieluiten käytän kuvia, joissa naama näkyy vähän epäviistosti tai joissa mulla on aurinkolasit. Lapsilta kysyn, saako laittaa kuvat julkisuuteen. Lapset ovat aikuisia, joten ymmärtävät, mistä on kysymys. Pipoja ja huiveja on vähän vaikeaa esitellä kunnollisesti, ilman että kuvassa on pää, ja ns. actionkuvat ovat kuitenkin käsitöissä kaikkein informatiivisimpia.

6. Do you show your/your children's face(s) in your photos? Why/Why not?

I let my face show if the photo is a decent one. I prefer photos that are shot from an angle or where I have my sunglasses on. I ask my children if it's okay to use a photo they appear in. They are adults so they know what it is all about. It's a bit hard to show hats or scarfs without showing the head. The so-called action photos are the most informative ones in my view.

7. Mitä kautta seuraat blogeja? Esim. Google reader, blogilista tms.

Käytän Google Readeriä. Olen asentanut selaimeeni (Safari) GReader RSS-lukijan, joka näyttää heti, jos joku on blogannut jotain uutta. Seurannassa on tällä hetkellä 58 blogia, joista useimmat ovat taiteen tai kulttuurin alueelta.

7. How do follow new blog posts? Do you use Google Reader or some other application?

I use Google Reader. I've installed an RSS client GReader on my browser (Safari), and now I get immediately notified of new blog posts. I have 58 blogs on my list most of which are on the topic of arts. 

8. Ostatko sujuvasti netistä vai mieluummin niin, että näet langan/värit konkreettisesti?

Olen kokenut nettiostaja ja olen oppinut läksyni. Nykyisin ostan vain muutamasta tutuksi tulleesta nettikaupasta tai sitten kivijalkakaupasta. Onneksemme Helsingissä on uusi, erinomainen lankakauppa Villavyyhti.

8. Are you in terms with net shopping or do you prefer shopping at your local yarn store so that you can really see and feel the yarn?

I'm an experienced net shopper and I've learned my lessons. Nowadays, I use only a couple of net shops that I trust and I try to use our local yarn store as much as possible. Luckily, we have a new shop in Helsinki: the excellent Villavyyhti.

9. Oletko osallistunut neuletapaamisiin (lyhyet tapaamiset, retriitit)?

Olen joskus käynyt vain pistäytymässä. En ole jostain syystä kokenut niitä oikein omakseni. Käsityökursseilla olen kyllä käynyt, niistä tykkään kovasti.

9. Have you participated in knitting group meetings or retreats?

I've only popped in once or twice. For some reason, I haven't really found them as my cup of tea. I have taken various craft courses, however, they have been very enjoyable!

10. Entä vaihtoihin (sny, ravelryn vaihdot jne.)?

En ole kokeillut. En vaan ole tajunnut niiden ideaa. 

10. How about swaps?

Nope. I just can't see the point in them. 

11. Neulotko mieluummin/useammin ohuita vai paksuhkoja lankoja vai sujuvasti molempia tilanteen mukaan?

Neulominen sujuu sekä ohuilla että paksuilla langoilla, mutta minusta on tullut yhä enemmän ohuiden lankojen ystävä. Neuleista tulee keveämpiä, käyttökelpoisempia, ja ohuet langat ovat riittoisampiakin. Sitä paitsi ohuen langan kanssa riittää pidempään tekemistä. Eihän mulla ole kiire, kun neulominen on mulle vaan kiva, ihana harrastus!

11. Do you prefer thin or thick yarns in your knitting? Or are you fluent in both languages?

I knit with both thin and thick yarns, no problem with that. However, I've become more and more friends with thinner yarns (from DK to fingering weight). It is just that items knitted with thinner yarns are so much lighter and more practical, and the yardage is so much better. Besides, thinner yarns take more time to finish. I'm in no hurry as knitting is just a lovely hobby!

Toukokuu on mielestäni vuoden parasta aikaa. Melkein parasta keväässä on nokkonen. Koska se on sekä terveellistä, ilmaista että herkullista, julistan nokkosen ilosanomaa ja kehotan ainakin kokeilemaan. Oma nokkosmaani on maalla saaristossa: tässä vinkiksi tällä viikolla suorittama proseduurini.

The month of May is, in my view, the best time of the year. One of the very best things of spring is the stinging nettle. Because nettles are both healthy, free and delicious, I preach the gospel of nettles and strongly encourage you to at least give it a go. My own nettle paradise is at the country house in the archipelago. Be my guest and take a look at how I did my nettles last week.

Huuhtelua / Rinsing.

Nokkonen on parhaimmillaan nuorena eli juuri nyt toukokuussa. Kumihanskat käteen ja keräämään: itse nypin talteen vain nokkosen latvukset. Jos kitken liian laajalle levinneitä kasvustoja, sitten riivin talteen kaikki muutkin lehdet.

Nettles are at their best when they are young. Put on your rubber gloves and go harvesting: I only pick the youngest crowns, but if I need to fo some weeding in the nettle bushes, then I use all the leaves.

Tuoreet nokkoset huuhdellaan reilusti ennen käyttöä. Mukana on aina joku epäonninen toukka, hiekkaa tai muuta roskaa.

Use plenty of fresh water to rinse your crop. There's always some grit, dust and an unlucky caterpillar hiding amongst the leaves.

Huuhdellut nokkoset voi joko kuivata tai ryöpätä. Minä suosin ryöppäämistä eli kippaan huuhdellut nokkosenlehdet runsaaseen kiehuvaan veteen ja keitän n. 5 minuuttia. Tällä kertaa keitin nokkoset kahdessa erässä, kun kattilani oli niin pieni.

Nettles can either be prepared by drying or blanching. My choice is blanching which means that I toss the rinsed leaves in a panful of boiling water and cook them for c. 5 minutes. This time I needed  to work on two batches because my pan was so small.

Ryöpätyt nokkoset valutetaan, mutta älä heitä keitinvettä pois, se on erinomaista, vahvan ravitsevaa puutarhan kasteluvettä. Kannattaa säästää talteen ja käyttää laimennettuna.

Drain off the cooking water but don't throw it away! It's an excellent, strong and nourishing fertilizer. Save your treasure and use (diluted) in your garden.

Pienellä aherruksella saa ihanan palkinnon: Päivän kala à la Villa Maija eli tuoretta, itse pyydettyä siikaa, parsaa, perunaa ja nokkosmuhennosta. Nokkosmuhennos syntyy niin, että laittaa nokareen voita pannuun ja lisää mukaan noin 1,5–2 dl ryöpättyä ja veitsellä hieman hienonnettua nokkosta. Hetken haudutus ja sitten vielä päälle n. 2 dl paksua kermaa, hieman suolaa ja mustapippuria. Haudutetaan muutama minuutti lisää eli niin kauan kuin kerma sakenee. Syntisen hyvää!

My efforts yielded to a fantastic prize: fish of the day à la Villa Maija a.k.a fresh whitefish self-cought from the sea in the morning, some potatoes, asparagus and creamed nettles. Melt a spoonful of butter in a saucepan, add c. 1.5 dl of blanched nettles, roughly worked through with a knife. Simmer for a minute or two, and then add c. 2 dl of thick, heavy cream. Season with salt and black pepper. Simmer gently until the cream thickens itself up. A sinful delicacy!

Näen punaista / I see red

Surffasin taas kerran netissä sukkalankojen perässä ja jotenkin tuli apea olo. Kuulun ns. tiedostaviin kuluttajiin ja vaalin omia, eettisiä, ekologisia ja kansantaloudellisia ihanteitani myös lankaostoksilla. Tuotteen hinta on vain yksi tekijä omalla kriteerilistallani. Eläinperäisissä tuotteissa kuten maidossa, munissa, lihassa tai villalangassa ykkösenä on eläinten asiallinen kohtelu ja hyvä hoito. Heti perässä tulevat sellaiset seikat kuin se, minkälaiselle ja missä sijaitsevalle yritykselle euroni menevät ja tuotteen konsepti. Sitten alkavat vaikuttaa omat senhetkiset toiveeni: villalankojen kohdalla värit, langan koostumus, paksuus jne.

I was surfing on the net the other day to buy some sock yarn, and somehow got a bit dispirited. I am one of those so-called conscious consumers and tend to cherish my own, ethical, ecological, and economical values also whist yarn shopping. The price is only one criterion on my list. Pertaining to animal products such as milk, eggs, meat, or wool, I prize the quality of animal keeping and farm animal welfare the highest. The runner-ups are things like what kind of an enterprise benefits from my euros and where is it located, and the overall concept of the product. Only then my current wishes come into the picture. When speaking of wool, these issues relate to colours, yarn weight, fiber type etc. 

Mistä apea oloni johtui? No ihan yksinkertaisesti siitä, että Suomessa tehdään upeita, hienoja lankoja, mutta niiden ostaminen on hankalaa. Pitää liittyä lankaklubiin, pitää seurata päivitysblogeja, pitää lähettää sähköpostia, pitää kysellä, pitää jaksaa odottaa, pitää tehdä kompromisseja, pitää tietää mitä etsii ja mistä. Kauppamiehen taidot tuntuvat olevan tällä saralla aivan hukassa. Tuntuu siltä, kuin seisoisin keskellä toria lompakko pullollaan huutamassa: "myykää mulle lankaa!". Eikä kukaan myy. Supattavat vaan keskenään kojuissaan ja huokaavat, kun ei kauppa käy ja "voi, jos tuolle nyt ryhtyisimme myymään, niin mitä sitten tapahtuisi, voisi tulla toinen ja kolmaskin ostaja ja voi voi, rauhamme olisi mennyttä."

Why did I get so dispirited? Well, simply because I noticed that we have some excellent yarn and wool products and producers here in Finland, but buying them is really strenious. You have to join a yarn club, follow the updates from blogs, send emails, make phone calls, ask around, have the patience to wait, make compromises, know what and where to look for stuff. Business skills seem to be completely an unknown term in this sector. I feel as if I would be standing in the middle of a market square with my purce full of money and screaming: "please, sell my some yarn!!!". And nobody does. All they seem to do is to confab at their vendours' booths and sigh: "oh how bad the business is; oh no, now if we sell yarn to that woman over there, then what would happen next? There would be another buyer and then another, and, oh no, our peace and quiet would be eternally gone."

Onneksi olen jo kauan sitten löytänyt omat luottopajani: Petäjävedellä sijaitsevan Utunan ja Perniössä sijaitsevan Riihivillan. Kummankin putiikin tuotteet ylittävät kirkkaasti omat, mielestäni kohtuulliset laatuvaatimukset. Lisäksi vielä asiointi sujuu, värit ovat houkuttelevia, konseptit kirkkaita ja omaperäisiä.

Luckily I have long since located my trusted yarn shops: Utuna located in Petäjävesi, and Riihivilla located in Perniö. Both shops offer products that excell at fulfilling my humble requirements. In addition, shopping has been made easy; the colours are tempting; and the business concepts are cristal clear and idiosyncratic.

Pieleen mennyt nettiostosreissuni otti niin aivoon, että kaivoin lankakorista yhden vyyhdin Riihivillan punaista Ukkoa ja loin silmukat Judy Sumnerin kirjasta Knitted Socks East and West löytämääni Karate-mallin. Sekä langan väri että mallin nimi sopivat täsmällisesti fiiliksiini. Kiai!

I was so annoyed about my failed shopping experience that I dug a skein of Riihivilla's red Ukko sock yarn and casted on for a pair of Karate socks from Judy Sumner's book Knitted Socks East and West. Both the name of the pattern and the colour match my mood. Kiai!

Osastossa Nolot tunnustukset raportoitavana seuraavaa:

• vaikka olen lankapaastolla, ostin kahden puserollisen verran lankoja (juu, kaksi arvokasta pussukkaa), koska ne langat olivat kerrassaan mahtavan houkuttelevia;
• vaikka olen (yhä) lankapaastolla, ostin lisäksi (juu, edellisten hankintojen päälle) lisää lankaa, koska himoitsen päästä taas kutomaan kangaspuilla ja vankistamaan kudontataitojani ja tarvitsin sopivaa loimilankaa lankakorin pohjalle unohtuneelle Handun Silkkimerinohuivilangalle.

Pertaining to the topic Embarrassing Confessions, I must report the following:

• although I'm on a yarn diet, I bought yarn for two pullovers (yes, not just one, but two precious bags), because the yarns in question were just so reallyreallyreally temptingly lovely;
• although I'm (still) on a yarn diet, I bought, in addition to the previous purchases (yes, you read it correctly, in addition), some more yarn because I'm just longing to weave and to strengthen my skills in that area, and I needed a matching yarn for the warp for weaving with the forgotten Handu's Silk and merino scarf yarn. 

Hyvin menee heikkoluontoisella. Eihän minun pitänyt ostaa yhtään lisää lankaa, ei viime kuussa, ei tässä kuussa, eikä koko keväänä. Lankaa on vaikka lampaat söis, sanoisi minun mummivainaani.

Weak minds go strong. I wasn't supposed to buy any yarn, not last month, not this month, nor during the whole spring term. There's enough yarn to feed the sheep, would my late granny say.

Mutta voi tätä langenneen nautinnon määrää! Tämä kultakasa on BC Garnin uutta silkkivillasekoitetta Sarah Tweediä, sävy on numero 27 Gold. Näppituntumalla lanka on hyvin laskeutuvaa, muttei aivan tunnottoman lötköä. Tiheydeksi näyttäisi tulevan 3.0 mm:n puikoilla jotain luokkaa 18 s / 10 cm. Sekä langan väri, loistokas kiilto että neulostekstuuri vie ajatukset renessanssiajalle. Skissailen langasta tunikaa, jossa olisi avara pääntie, pientä pussitusta hihoissa ja verkkoneulosta somisteena.

But I must say that the payoff of a succumb is a stellar fulfillment! This pile of gold is a silk-wool mix called Sarah Tweed by BC Garn in shade number 27 Gold. The first touch gives an impression that the yarn would yield to something with a good drape but not completely numb and limber. My swatch is telling that the gauge will be around 18 sts / 10 cm with needles no 3.0 mm. Both the shade, the regal lustrousness, and the texture induce to an association with the Renaissance.  I'm sketching a tunic that would have a scoop neckline, some sort of puff sleeves, and net stitch embellishements.

Toinen hankintani on sekin uutuuslankaa: Riveting by Kolláge Yarns. Lanka on tuotettu kierrätetyistä farkuista. Päädyin sävyyn 7901 Storm Denim, joka on juuri täsmälleen oikea kauhtunut ja haalistunut farkunsininen. Tästä haluan tehdä klassisen v-aukkoisen palmikkovillatakin. Lanka oli varsin kallista, joten mallin valinnassa pitää käyttää tavallista suurempaa harkintaa.

My other purchase is also a season's novelty: Riveting by Kolláge Yarns that has been produced of recycled blue jeans. My choice of shade was for number 7901 Storm Denim which is the exactly right shade of really old, faded and worndown blue jeans. My plan is to knit this into a classical, v-neck cabled cardigan. The yarn is quite expensive, so I need to be very careful with my pattern search.

Koska olet sen arvoinen / Because you're worth it

Teen parin viikon välein vapaaehtoistyötä, ja tänään oli niissä hommissa vaihteeksi vähän raskaammanpuoleinen aamupäivä. Koska tavallista itsehoitolääkettäni hyvää punaviiniä ei ollut oikein sopivaa alkaa siemailla keskellä kiireistä tiistaita, ajattelin kotimatkalla palkita itseäni joko langalla tai rahkapullalla.

Every fortnight I do some voluntary work. Today, my morning session was a bit heavier than usually. As I didn't have the chance nor the guts to use my normal self-help remedy, good red wine, I thought to reward myself with a nice sour cream bun or some yarn on the way home.

En ostanut rahkapullaa, enkä lankaakaan. Tein ruokaostokseni, muistin lankalakkoni, ajattelin järkevästi, hillitsin itseni urhoollisesti, ja köröttelin räntäsateessa bussilla kotiin. Mutta palkinto odotti kuin odottikin kotona. Posti oli tuonut sekä Judy Sumnerin kirjan Knitted Socks East and West että The Loopy Eweltä tilaamani sukkalangat. Kaadoin itselleni kupin kahvia ja suuntasin suoraa päätä sohvaan.

I didn't buy any yarn, nor the bun. I just did my groceries, remembered being on a yarn fast, I tried to be sensible, and I just took the bus home in the sleet. But I got my reward after all. The mail man had brought me both a sock pattern book by Judy Sumner, Knitted Socks East and West, and a package from The Loopy Ewe. I poured myself a cup of coffee and headed straight in the sofa.

Sumnerin kirja vaikuttaa ensi silmäyksellä aivan ihanalta. Tässä on kirja, jonka jokainen malli herättää innostusta. Mallien ideat ovat peräisin japanilaisesta neuleperinteestä, ja sen huomaa. Kuvat ovat tunnelmallisia, ohjeet selkeitä ja omaperäisiä, ja koko setti on tyylikäs, inspiroiva ja raikas. Haluan tehdä heti näistä jokaisen!

At the first glance, Sumner's book appears to be just wonderful. Here is a book in which every single pattern thrills you. The models are inspired by Japanese stitch tradition, and you can really see that. The images are full of dense atmosphere, the patterns are clear and unique, and the whole set is stylish, inspiring and fresh. I want to knit every pair from this book at once!

Kaksi uutta lankavyyhtiäni olivat nekin odotuksen arvoisia. Toinen langoista on The Sanguine Gryphonin kuuluisaa Bugga-luksuslankaa sävyssä Juniper Hairstreak. Toinen taas upeaa, Fleece Artistin valmistamaa, nailonvahvistettua Blueface Leicester -lampaan villasta kehrättyä sukkalankaa sävyssä Earth.

The two skeins of yarn were also worth waiting for. The other skein is esteemed and luxorious Bugga by The Sanguine Gryphon in shade Juniper Hairstreak. The other is by the Fleece Artist, the BFL sock in shade Earth.

Sokerina pohjalla oli The Loopy Ewen paketti. Kivasti pakattu, mukana pieni yllätyslahja ja lähetyslistan takana käsinkirjoitettu viesti: "Hei Anni, Kiitos kun tilasit meiltä, oli ilo saada asioida kanssasi. Nauti uusista hankinnoistasi; toivomme sinulle paljon neulomisaikaa tälle viikolle." Snif. Ja jep. Koska me kaikki olemme ihanien asioiden arvoisia.

Loopy Ewe's package was the cherry on the cake. It was nicely and carefully wrapped, included a little surprise gift and a handwritten note on the back of the invoice: "Hi Anni, We so appreciate your order. Thanks for doing business with us! Enjoy your new things; we hope you find lots of knitting time this week." Snif! And yes. Because every one of us are worth the wonderful things.

Ihana Terra-huivi on valmis! Malli on Jared Floodin eli Brooklyn Tweed -brändilla toimivan newyorkilaisen suunnittelijan. Brooklyn Tweed on noussut neuleskenessä aikamoiseen kulttimaineeseen, eikä siinä mitään, hänen ohjeensa ovat erittäin ammattitaitoisesti kirjoitettuja, tyylikkäästi designattuja ja itse mallitkin ovat kiehtovia. Mitä muuta neuloja voisi toivoa?

My lovely Terra shawl is ready! The pattern is designed by the well-known Brooklyn Tweed a.k.a Jared Flood. His brand has received quite a cult reputation in the knit scene and that's quite all right: his patterns are very proficiently written, their lay-out is always stylish, and the very patterns are intriguing. What else could a knitter ask for?

Noh, ehkä vähän vähemmän hössötystä ja hypeä. Terraa oli kiva neuloa, mutta ei tuossa kolmionmallisessa, ainaoikein-neuleella ja helpolla pitsikuviolla somistetussa huivissa ollut mitään ihmeellistä. Ihan kiva. Huivista tuli kuitenkin hieno, kiitos aivan käsittämättömän ihanan langan, joka on lietolaisen Honkarinteen tilan 100 % suomenlampaan karitsanvillaa. Ostin ennen joulua kaksi vyyhtiä heidän kojustaan Tuomaan markkinoilta Helsingin Esplanadinpuistosta. Lanka loppui kuitenkin kesken, ja ystävällisesti he lähettivät minulle sitä lisää, samalla kertaa myös luonnonvalkeaa. Lanka on kuohkeaa, pehmeää, muttei höttöä, ja sen vahvuus on noin 200 m / 100 g (arvioni vyyhdin painon ja kierrosmäärän perusteella). Suosittelen! "Support your local dealer" on mottoni ollut iät ja ajat, nyt on aivan superkatetta toitottaa tätä maailmallekin.

Well, perhaps I'd prefer a little less fuss and hype. Terra was an entertaining and relaxing project to work on, but there was really nothing spectacular about the triangular-shaped shawl design embellished with some basic garter stitch ridges and lace edgings. It was okay. Nevertheless, my shawl turned out to be just wonderful, thanks to the yarn which is out of this world. It's produced by a Finnish small farm based in Lieto and the wool is 100 % baby Finnsheep. I bought 2 skeins of this treasure from the booth at the Christmas Fair held in the Esplanade park in the Helsinki city centre. I ran out of it, but they kindly sent me some more, and I took the advantage of ordering the same yarn also in natural white. The yarn is feathery soft without being fluffy; the yardage is about 200 meters per 100 grams (calculated on the basis of the skein weight and yarn rounds in the skein). Warmly recommended! For ages, my motto has been "Support your local dealer". This time it's oh so easy to trumpet this out to everyone!

Maasta, maailmasta, maanläheisyydestä, juurista ja paikallisuudesta kun puhutaan, niin ostinpa kesken lankapaastoni myös Petäjävedellä toimivalta pieneltä Utunaltakin ihanaa suomalaisugrilaista Nutu-sukkalankaa. Nyt teen vihreästä Lempi-sävystä itselleni sukkia, tuo tumma terrakotta on nimeltään Lohtu. Vaikka kuva onkin ylivalottunut, voiko jotain näin sytyttävän ihanaa ollakaan!

Speaking of Terra, the earth, roots, locality, and the world, I also went out and bought - in the middle of my buy-no-yarn fast (!) - some Fenno-Ugric Nutu sock yarn from Utuna located in Petäjävesi.  I casted on for a pair of socks in green, the name of the shade is Lempi (in English something like love, fancy, and affection). The dark terracotta shade is called Lohtu (condolence). Despite the overexposed photo, aren't they just fascinating?
