Vastoinkäymisiä / Misfortune

Voi nenä sentään. Niin kun ei olisi tässä syksyssä ollut muutenkin tarpeeksi kuormaa kannettavaksi, nyt menee pieleen jo neulomisrintamallakin. Pitkään ja hartaasti neulomani Ashby-huivi menee purkuun. Ravelryn mukaan aloitin työn 12.8. ja neljä kuukautta myöhemmin on pakko todeta, että a) lanka ei riitä; b) vajaamuotoisena huivi ei toimi; ja c) vajaamuotoisenakin huivi on painava ja hankala. Mitä energian tuhlausta! Ihana kainuunharmas-lankani siirtyköön toiseen käyttöön. Ehkä guernsey-koristeltu slipari voisi olla sopiva kohde langoilleni?


Oh my. I thought I had already enough on my plate with all the hardship that this autumn brought along, but now even my knitting has begun to all go wrong. The Ashby shawl that I have knitted so patiently for 4 long months (CO date 12 August according to Ravelry) has come to its bitter end: unravelled will it be. Firstly, I ran out of yarn; secondly, its shape does not work if malformed; thirdly, even now it is too heavy and oddly shaped to be worn nicely. What a waste of energy! I'll make some better use of my lovely Kainuun grey yarn. Perhaps a nice vest in Guernsey style?

Ashbyn ongelma ei ollut vain lankani riittävyydessä, vaan myös sen haastavassa rakenteessa. Ensin neulotaan reunuskaitaletta, joka käännetään lyhennetyin kerroksin ja neulotaan sitten toisen sivun verran. Sitten poimitaan kaitaleen silmukat ja aletaan työstää keskipaneelia. Silmukat vähenevät, kunnes jäljelle on vain muutama pääteltävä. Jepjep. Ei tarvitse olla neulontanero löytääkseen kriittiset kohdat. Pitää osata tehdä siistejä lyhennettyjä kerroksia ja pitää osata poimia silmukoita tasaisesti, siististi ja tukevasti. Luulin osaavani kaiken tuon, mutta Ashby selätti kaikki taitoni. Lyhennetyt kerrokseni näyttivät rumilta. Palmikoiden takia melkoisen painava reunus venytti poimintakohtia rei'iksi. Ei hyvä.

The trouble with Ashby was not only my yardage, but also Ashby's rather challenging structure. First you knit the edge panel, turn it with short rows and knit the other side. Then you pick up stitches for the centre panel and start decreasing until you have a few left to be grafted together. Oh yes. You don't have to be a knitting wizard to notice the tricky parts. You need to be able to do neat short rows, and you need to be able to pick up stitches evenly, sturdily and elegantly. I think I can do all those things, but with Ashby, all my skills seemed to fail. My w&t:s looked ugly, the cabled and therefore heavy edging pulled the picked up stitches into unattractive holes. Not good.

I was happy to find great comfort and joy from Riihivilla. Here is a picture of the Lucky Hearts -mittens, a cheerful project that came out excellently. They will soon move to greet my goddaughter for her birthday.

Tämä syksy on pudottanut pikkuisen liian isoja iskuja ihan lähelle. Onneksi pahimmat kuopat on ylitetty. Lisäksi talossa on elämän pehmennykseksi puikot ja lankaa sekä hyviä, ihania, luovia ja inspiroivia ihmisiä ympärillä - sekä livenä että virtuaalisesti.

This autumn has hit me hard with slightly too heavy blows that have really struck close. Luckily, things are really okay now, and in addition, I have yarn and knitting needles to cushion me as well as so many good, lovely, inspiring and creative people around me - both in real life and in the virtual reality.

Pehmeät, lämpimät ja kauniit asiat loiventavat elämän alamäkiä. Toistaiseksi parhaat sukkani syntyivät Liz Abinanten Neely O'Hara -ohjeella. Istuvuus on täydellinen, mallineule oli aivan mahtava ja koko urakka sujui kuin tanssi. Hyvä minä!

Soft, warm and pretty things are needed to even up the worst bumps of life. My best pair of socks ever were knitted according to the Neely O'Hara pattern by Liz Abinante. Perfect fit, great pattern and faultless performance in knitting. Well done me!

Toinen ihana pikavauhtia valmistunut juttu on pieni pitsikauluri nimeltään Pretty Things. Ohje ei ollut ihan niin laadukkaasti kirjoitettu kuin mitä olisin maksulliselta ohjeelta odottanut, mutta lopputulos on oikein sievä. Harmi vaan, kun tämän tyyppiset kaulurisysteemit lörpähtävät ennen pitkää. Nätti ja lämmin tuo on kuitenkin.

Another quick knit is a small lace cowl named Pretty Things. I did not find the pattern to be as excellently written as I would have expected from a pattern that you have to pay for, but the result is quite lovely. It is such a shame that cowls of this kind sooner or later always loose their shape. A very pretty thing it is, however.

My Trillian shawl on the needles will be absolutely gorgeous, however. My yarn is Finnish Kainuu Grey produced and hand dyed by Woolgrey.  I already knitted a pair of mitts from it; they are just super to cushion my counterstrike.

Oi sentään, kuinka pitkällä ollaan jo syksyssä. Huomenna on jo lokakuun ensimmäinen. Luonto vetäytyy hiljalleen lepoon, me ihmiset laskeudumme kukin omalla tavallamme, askel askeleelta, talven hiljaisuuteen ja pimeyteen. Pelkkä ajatuskin värisyttää.

Oh dear, we have come so far in autumn. Tomorrow, it is already the 1st of October. Nature is gradually preparing itself for rest. We, the humans, take our steps to descend into the darkness and coldness of winter. I shiver just by thinking about it.

Teen omia talvivalmistelujani ensinnäkin huoltamalla kehoa. Opiskelen uusia, inspiroivia ruokareseptejä ja iloitsen satokaudesta. Erinomaisesti alkaneeseen juoksuharrastukseen tuli pakkolepoa, kun oikean nilkan akillesjänne kipeytyi. Kyseessä on rasitusvamma ja aikamoinen ongelmavyyhti, joka johtuu vasemman nilkan vanhoista urheiluvammoista, oikean jalan toimimattomasta pakaralihaksesta ja pohkeen kiinni hitsautuneista lihaskalvoista. Olen hyvässä hoidossa, mutta harmittaa vietävästi. Fysioterapia, jooga ja pilates auttavat katsomaan eteenpäin kohti onneksi aika pian koittavaa uutta alkua juoksuharjoittelussa.

I am preparing myself for winter firstly by taking care of my body. I have bought some new cookbooks and feel inspired by the harvest. As you may recall, I started to run in June, but - although the training programme was incredibly effective and it all started out so well - some 2 weeks ago I got doctor's orders to respite from all running for the time being. Thanks to some old sports injuries in the left ankle and an unfunctioning gluteus muscle as well as some sort of calf membranes somehow knit together on the right, my right achilles tendon had been severely overused. I am in expert care, but feel so terribly frustrated. Physiotherapy, yoga and pilates help me focus in the future when I can soonish and luckily start training again. 

Valmistaudun tietenkin myös neulomalla lämmikettä. Karvaiset perheenjäsenemme saivat uudet syysvillatakit aivan mittojen mukaan. Kirjoitin ylös toimenpiteet, 'ohje' on ilmaiseksi jaossa Ravelryssa.

Naturally, I am preparing for winter with new and warm knitwear. My two hairy and fluffy lady friends got new, tailor-made autumn pullovers. I wrote down some notes: the 'pattern' is freely available in Ravelry. 

Itselleni neulon hitaasti mutta rakkaudella suurta, harmaata Ashby-shaalia. Lisäksi askartelen klassista kaarrokevillatakkia, johon tulee vähän kirjoneuletta. Mallikuviot ovat aitoa suomalaista perinnettä ja karjalaisia. Lähteenä käytän Mary Oljen lapaskirjan kuvioita teoksesta Kirjokintaita. Lankakin on aitoa ja luonnosävyistä suomalaista suomenlampaan villaa.

For myself, I am knitting slowly by with love a large, grey Ashby shawl. In addition, I am working on a classical yoked cardigan with some stranded colourwork. The traditional motifs are  from the Finnish heritage, Karelian to be exact. My pattern source is a Finnish classic, Mary Olki's mitten book. Even my yarn is 100 % Finnsheep in natural shades.

Käsiäkin paleltaa, joten neuloin itselleni pikavauhtia valmistuneet ranteenlämmittimet. Tässäkin on lankana suomalaista alkuperäiskuitua. Woolgreyn Alku-lanka on 100 % Kainuunharmaksen luomukaritsan villaa.

Napeilla pelaten | Playing with buttons

Viime aikoina on tullut neulottua pari villatakkia. Villatakkiin tarvitaan tietysti napit, ja niiden valinta on sitten yllättävän hankalaa. Nousipa ihan kunnon hiki otsaan. En muistanutkaan, kuinka paljon napit vaikuttavat takin ulkonäköön ja käyttömukavuuteen. Olen yhä ankaralla lankadieetillä ja muutenkin säästökuurilla, joten lisähaasteenani oli löytää napit vanhoista nappikokoelmistani.

Lately, I've been knitting cardigans and even succeeded to finish a couple of them. Cardigans need buttons and oh boy, what a whale of a job choosing the right buttons can be! I had completely forgotten how much buttons affect both the look and usability. I'm still on a strict yarn diet and, by and large, living on a budget. This gave an extra challenge: the buttons were to be found from my existing collections.

Jep, myönnän olleeni taas tylsä ihminen: valitsin mustat perusnapit. Ne nyt vaan sattuivat mielestäni sopimaan parhaiten takin 60-lukulaiseen ilmeeseen.

Yes, I admit having been a really boring person as I chose the basic black buttons. In my view, they just happened to work perfectly together with the swinging 60's style of the pattern. 

Nappileikki oli sinänsä hauskaa, sillä löysin lankapurkistani varsinaisia aarteita. Aarteet ovat perintökamaa ompelutaitoisilta isoäideiltä ja isotädeiltä sekä ompelutaidottomalta, mutta muotitietoiselta ja ateljeetyönä tehtyihin juhla-asuihin investoineelta äidiltäni. Alla parhaat palat, osa napeista on korumaisen upeita ja suuria yksittäiskappaleita. Minkähänlainen villatakki sopisi esimerkiksi ylimmän, n. 4,5 cm kokoisen napin ympärille...?

As such, playing with buttons was great fun as I found some real treasures from my button box. Some of the best buttons came to my possession from my late grandmothers and grand aunts who were all very good at sewing. Some of the real treasures belonged to my mother who instead of sewing, had a good fashion eye and invested in haute couture party wear. The collage below shows some of the best bits; some of the buttons are unique and quite large. I wonder what kind of a cardigan would suit around the topmost button, c. 4.5 centimeters in diameter...?

Kuinkas sattuikaan! Edellinen postaukseni tähän laiminlyötyyn blogiini oli syyskuulta, jolloin aloittelin oranssia Knitted Long Jacket -takkiani. Nyt uusi, kuohkean lämmin villatakkini on vihdoin valmis.

How convenient! My last post in this neglected blog of mine dates from September when I was just beginning my project with the Knitted Long Jacket. Now my new, cushy cardi is finally finished.

Kuvassa nautin paksun alpakkalangan lämmöstä yhdessä pikkuisen Vilkku-koiramme kanssa. Hän on 8-vuotias Coton-de-Tulear-narttu, ja hänen kaverinsa, kuningatar Kiki, 14 vee, kuikuilee kameramiehen takaa. Siksi Vilkku taitaa olla tavallista onnellisempi saadessaan vähän ikiomaa huomiota ja taputuksia päälaelle. Eikös me kaikki tykätä sellaisesta, vai mikä?

In the picture, I'm celebrating the warmth of the thick alpaca yarn with our little fluffy dog Vilkku. She's a Cotton de Tulear, 8 years old. Her peer, Queen Kiki, 14 years, was lurking behind the camera man whilst this photo was taken. That's why Vilkku seems to have extra enjoyment of this rare moment of one-to-one attention and a pat on the head. Can't blame her; we'd all like that, wouldn't we?

Ufoutuneesta eli korin pohjalle jostain syystä jämähtäneestä villatakistani oli tulla oikea pitkän matkan estejuoksu. Sinänsä takkia oli helppo ja joutuisa tehdä, Dropsin Nepal-alpakkavilla oli kuohkeaa ja ketterää käsissä, ja langan värikin oli iloinen. Joskus kuitenkin tulee kaikenalaista muuta sälää kuin esteiksi eteen. Tällä kertaa neulonta-aikaa ei sitten jäänytkään kovin paljoa, ja villatakin sijaan piti neuloa talvikelin vaatimia lapasia, huiveja, sukkia ja sen sellaista muuta pientä ja tarpeellisempaa.

The cardi was almost an UnFinishedObject; I forgot it at the bottom of my knitting basket just too often. Knitting it was like long hurdling, although as such, it was a quick and straightforward project. The alpaca wool blend by Drops was a pleasure to work with, and even the colour was inspiring. Sometimes, however, there are so many things that take priority so that knitting becomes like an obstacle course. With this one, I eventually didn't have that much knitting time and there were – thanks to winter - all these usual winter items such as mittens, scarves, shawls and socks to be knitted first.

nasty looking collar seam.
I re-knitted mine:
picked up the collar stitches
AND the button band stitches;
then finished the whole thing up
into one, consistent collar piece
(used smaller needles here, 5.0 mm).

Maaliin tulo on kuitenkin aina yhtä suuri helpotus ja ilonaihe: sitä hauskempaa, mitä pidempi matka on takana. Ehkäpä palkitsen itseni mukavalla sohvaloikoilulla ja käyn selailemaan Ravelryn ohjetietokantaa. Haluan heti alkaa suunnitella seuraavaa pitkän matkan projektia, Kiki ja Vilkku kainalossa tietenkin.

Crossing the finishing line is nevertheless always a big relief and triumph. I think I'll reward myself with a nice lie-down on the sofa and do some searches in the Ravelry database. I want to start planning the next long-haul project, with Kiki and Vilkku curled up against me, of course.

Neulo kyynelehtien / Knitting with tears

Pieleen meni! En tähdännyt ihan tällaiseen lopputulokseen, kun ryhdyin väsäämään pientä, kesäistä villatakkia lankakorin pohjalle unohtuneesta hamppulangasta.

Oh no, this is not what I was aiming at when I started to knit a little summer cardigan from a few skeins of hemp yarn that lay forgotten at the bottom of my stash. 

Ajatus oli hyvä, ja työ meni periaatteessa ihan käsikirjoituksen mukaan. Perusohjeena käytin Elizabeth Zimmermannin saumattoman kaarrokevillapaidan ohjetta, joka löytyy mm. kirjasta Knitting without Tears. Mitoituksen pohjana käytin vanhaa huppariani.

The thought behind the project was OK and I can't say that the project failed because of the manuscript. I used Elizabeth Zimmermann's guidelines for a seamless yoked sweater that have been published e.g. in her book Knitting without Tears. The measurements were took from my old hooded sweater.

Tein ensin hihat, sitten vartalo-osan. Sen jälkeen liitin hihat vartaloon, laskin kainaloon jäävät silmukat ja yhdistin loput kaarrokkeeksi.

First, I knitted the sleeves, then the body. The next step was to attach the sleeves to the body: I counted the number of stitches to be left under the arms and joined the rest into a yoke.

Sitten alkoivat vaikeudet. Lanka loppui, piti tilata lisää. Se oli eri värjäyserää, ja sävyero oli valtava. Alkuperäinen lanka oli kauniin hopeanharmaata, uusi lanka oli tumman siniharmaata. Purin takaisinpäin, ja ryhdyin raidottamaan lankoja; ajattelin, että viime kädessä valmiin villatakin värjäys vaikkapa mustaksi kuittaa ongelman.

This is where the trouble started. I ran out of yarn and had to buy some more. The new yarn was from a different dye lot, and the difference in the shades was enormous. The original yarn had a lovely silver grey shade; the new yarn was darker and more blue. I ripped the cardi a little back to stripe them and thought that, well, I can always dye the finished cardi black if the stripes are too visible.

Jatkoin kaarrokkeen kanssa EZ:n ohjeiden mukaan. Koko kaarrokkeen korkeus oli mittojen mukaan 24 cm, joten puoliväliin asti piti mennä kaventamatta, sitten kaventaa silmukoista kolmasosa 12, 18 ja 24 cm:n kohdalla. Kun kaarroke oli tarpeeksi korkea, piti nostaa vielä niskaa lyhennetyin kerroksin. Sitten koukin vielä silmukat kaula-aukon reunoista ja neuloin vähän viimeistelevää ainaoikein-reunusta. Helppoa kuin mikä, koesovitukset hämärässä huoneessa näyttivät ihan mukiinmeneviltä. Ja voihan nenä kuinka iloisena päättelinkään viimeisiä silmukoita.

I continued with the yoke as EZ instructs the knitter. The length of the yoke was supposed to be 24 cm, so I was to knit 12 cm without any decreases and then decrease 1/3 of the stitches at 12, 18 and 24 cm. Having done this, I lifted the neck a couple of centimeters with short rows. Then I picked up some stitches form the neckline and finished the cardi off with some rows of garter stitch. Oh, how easy it was, and the few try-ons looked just fine in the shady room. And oh boy, how pleased I was when I binding off the last stitches.

Lopputulos on kuitenkin aivan kamala. Tein kaarrokkeen aina-oikein-neuleena ja sehän pullottaa ulospäin kuin mikäkin pussi. Olisi pitänyt vaihtaa kaarrokkeeseen pienemmät puikot. Sävyero lankojen välillä on aivan hirveä. Hamppu tuntui kovalta neuloessa, mutta tuntuu vielä ikävämmältä ihoa vasten. Kaarroke on niskasta aivan liian pitkä, joten yksinkertaisesta pitsineuleesta tekemäni reikäraidat asettuvat ihan vinoon. Voi itkujen kevät, mikä ohari! Kaiken huipuksi huomasin jo työtä tehdessäni, ettei hamppulanka kestä paljoa purkamista, vaan säikeet avautuvat ja lanka hajoaa sietämättömäksi narukimpuksi.

The result is terrible. I made the yoke with garter stitch which makes the yoke much wider than the body resulting in a awful, baggy top. I should have changed into smaller needle size for the yoke. The shade difference is horrible. Hemp was hard on the hands while on the needles, but it feels even more unpleasant against the skin. The yoke is far too long from the neck so that the lace stripes go all slanted. Oh shoot what a miss! On the top of all I noticed already while knitting the damned thing that the hemp yarn doesn't like to be ripped. It unravels its plies and breaks down into a bunch of thread. 

Roskiin lentää tämä kokeilu. Mitä ajan ja rahan haaskausta! Ja mitä opin tästä? Noh, ainakaan ei enää ikinä hamppua minulle, kiitos. Ja se sisäinen Elizabeth Zimmermannkin saa vielä olla hukassa ihan rauhassa. Neulon loppuvuoden vain satavarmoja sukkia, asusteita ja villatakkeja oikeilla ohjeilla. Neulominenhan on niin ihana harrastus, vai mitä...?

This experiment goes straight to the trash. What a waste of time and money! And did I learn anything? Well, for one thing, hemp yarn never again, thank you very much.  And on my behalf, my inner Elizabeth Zimmermann may stay undiscovered for a while. I'll knit nothing but infallible socks and accessories, and cardigans with real patterns for the rest of the year. Knitting is such a fantastic hobby, isn't it...?

Tässä nykyisessä, tukevassa keski-iän olomuodossa on se hyvä puoli, että minulle on vihdoin kirkastunut se, millaisia vaatteita minun kannattaa hankkia, tehdä ja käyttää (ja millaisia ei ...). Tykkään kovasti neulevaatteista, koska ne ovat mukavan joustavia eivätkä vaadi silittämistä ja muuta jatkuvaa huoltoa, ja tykkään pitkistä linjoista, koska ne rakentavat puuttuvia linjoja ja antavat eleganssia melko simppeliin pukeutumistyyliini. Kun näin ensimmäiset kuvat Veera Välimäen Sprout-takista, tiesin heti, että tuossa on minulle aivan täydellinen neulemalli.

The good side in my current state, being comfortably and cozily middle-aged, is that I've finally learned what kind of clothes to knit, buy and wear (and what not to...). I truly like knitted garments, because they are snug and stretchy and they don't require constant ironing or other maintenance. I also like long lines, because they fit to my body shape and give style and elegance to my rather simple attire. When I saw the first pictures of Veera Välimäki's Sprout cardigan, I knew immediately that this would be The Cardi to make for me. 

Tänään oli se neulojan suuri päivä, kun sain oman Itu-takkini napit ommeltua, takin niskaani ja valokuvaajan paikalle. Mikä ihana takki tästä tulikaan! Istuvuus on täydellinen, malli on supertäydellinen, ja langan tuntu on aivan ihana. Tälle on taatusti käyttöä erilaisissa kesäisissä pikkujuhlissa. Langan kullankimalteinen sävy antaa lisäjuhlavuutta. Sävy on kyllä vähän vaikea: jossain valossa kulta muuttuu likaisenkeltaiseksi, vähän vihertäväksikin, joissain toisessa valossa kulta alkaa oikein loistaa. Lankaa jäi vähän yli, joten saatanpa tekaista vielä pienen laukun jakkuni kaveriksi.

Today was the great day in a knitter's life when I sew in the buttons, dressed the cardi on, and got my newest project photographed. What a wonderful jacket my Sprout turned into! The fit is perfect, the model is super perfect, and the feel of the yarn just sensational. I will have plenty of use for this one at the various summer parties and occations. The golden sheen of the yarn adds extra opulence to the jacket. The shade is a bit difficult, though. In some light, gold turns into dirty mustardy shade, even a bit greenish; in some other light, the gold just gleams and shimmers. I still have some yarn, so I may knit a small purse or a bag to go with the jacket. 

Napeiksi löytyi 4 erilaista kultanappia äidin vintage-nappiperinnöstä. Hienot Guessin kultasandaalini ja kultakynsilakka tulevat olemaan takuuvarmat lisämausteet.

I found an odd set of four golden buttons from my late mother's vintage button stash. My posh golden sandals by Guess and a bottle of golden nail polish will be guaranteed accessories.

Kolme kuukautta neulomista on nyt takanapäin. Tuloksena on hieno jakku, kiitos Veeran loistavan ohjeen. Kuinka palkitsevaa neulominen voi parhaimmillaan ollakaan!

Three months of on-and-off knitting is now behind me. I have made a lovely jacket, thanks to Veera's outstanding design and pattern writing. How rewarding can knitting be at its best!

Huu, mikä huhtikuu! Tekemistä riittää, jopa siinä määrin, että työ ja muu elämä ovat vakavasti alkaneet haitata harrastuksia. Ulkona on ihanaa, peipposet laulavat, ja puutarhan kukkapenkki puskee ylös ensimmäisiä hentoja versojaan. Pitäisi haravoida, tyhjentää kompostia, leikata kuolleita oksia ja karsia pensaita. Ensimmäiset taimikylvöt sain onneksi tehtyä: neljää erilaista chiliä, kahta erilaista kesäkurpitsaa, rosmariinia, timjamia, ja vielä pari pientä pottia kelloköynnöstä. Kaari-ensemblen Stabat mater -konserttikin lähestyy uhkaavasti, ja senkin kanssa on vielä yhtä sun toista puuhaa. Kohta on pääsiäinen, ja sitten on vuodenkierron oma huippukohtani eli vappu!

The awesome April's here! I've been busy with work even to the extent that work and other stuff have severely begun to interfere with my hobbies. The weather is just wonderful, the chaffinches are singing, and my flower beds are pushing up the very first, delicate sprouts. I should go out and rake the lawn, empty the compost, remove dead branches from the trees, and trim the bushes. At least I have already managed to sow the first seeds: chilies of 4 different varieties, 2 varieties of zucchini, some rosmary and thyme, and even a couple of pots of blue Cathedral Bells (Cobaea Scandens). The Easter concert of my choir, Kaari-Ensemble, is on the horizon as well, and I still have plenty to do with that, too. Soon, it will be Easter, and then it will be the 1st of May, my personal peak of the annual cycle.

Kun lämpomittari kipuaa yli nollan, villasukkien ja lapasten neulominen alkaa tuntua hölmöltä. Olenkin siirtynyt huiveihin, sillä ne ovat suhteellisen nopeatekoisia ja niille on käyttöä myös Suomen kesässä. Tällä hetkellä puikoilla on Veera Välimäen suunnittelema Stripe Study Shawl. Teen sitä oranssista ja luonnonvalkeasta PukkIlu-langasta, joka kuuluu Handun tuotteisiin ja on aivan hurmaavaa, ohuehkoksi ja tiukkakierteiseksi kehrättyä suomenlampaan villaa. Stripe Study Shawl -huivini on aivan loppumetreillä. Enää puuttuu parisen senttiä vaaleaa reunakaistaletta ja sitten se on valmis. Malli on suorastaan nerokas, joskin ainaoikeinneuleen vääntäminen alkaa jo vähän puuduttaa.


When the temperature rises above zero, it suddenly feels rather silly to knit socks and mittens. I've taken on knitting shawls instead; they are relatively fast to knit and believe me, they are useful in Finland also in the summer. At the moment, I'm working on Stripe Study Shawl designed by Veera Välimäki. My version is striped with orange and natural white PukkIlu; a fingering weight, tightly spun 100 % Finnsheep produced as a local speciality by Handu. My Stripe Study only misses a couple of more centimeters of the white border and then it will be finished. The pattern is ingenious in its simplicity, although I'm getting a bit bored slogging away the everlasting garter stitch.

Veera Välimäellä on paljon todella kiinnostavia malleja, ja työlistallani ovat ainakin Folded ja Celery. Niihin olisi jo langatkin valmiina. Itse asiassa vähän hävettää. Olen ollut mukamas lankapaastolla ja mukamas kieltäytynyt ostamasta uutta lankaa. Ja höpönlöpön! Jotenkin kummasti uusimpaan Visa-laskuuni oli ilmestynyt 160 euron edestä lankaostoksia! Puikot heilumaan, nainen!

Veera Välimäki has many intriguing pattern designs: for example Folded and Celery are on my own to-do-list. I even have the yarn for them. In fact, I feel a bit ashamed. I was supposed to be on a yarn fast and not to buy any more yarn. Get out of here! Somehow my latest credit card bill included yarn purchaces worth of 160 euros! Get your needles clinking, woman!

Huivi josta tulikin takki / A scarf that actually became a coat

Kaikki alkoi Clapotiksesta. Innostuin tuosta huivista alkuvuodesta 2008, kun löysin Knittyn, Ravelryn ja muut virtuaalisen neuleskenen ihmemaat. Clapotis oli jo tuolloin klassikko, mutta ajattelin 'parempi myöhään kuin ei milloinkaan' ja ryhdyin etsimään omaa versiotani varten täydellistä lankaa.

It all started with Clapotis. I got inspired by that scarf at the beginning of year 2008 when I encountered with Knitty, Ravelry and other wonderlands of the virtual knit scene. Clapotis was a classic already at that time, but I thought 'better late than never' and started to search for the perfect yarn for my own version.

Koska Clapotis kaipasi langakseen liukuvärjättyä lankaa, kuvaan astui mukaan merkillinen ja kiehtova japanilainen väri-ilotulituslanka Noro. Sitä ei saanut silloin Suomesta, mutta urheana tilasin omat keräni suoraan Japanista. Savun, farkun, levän, jaden ja metsän sävyissä välkkyvät kahdeksan silkki-villa-kerästä saapui, ja näin jo silmissäni upean huivini: pian se valmistuu käyttööni, kohta luon silmukat.

As Clapotis requests a variegated yarn, in entered the marvelous and intriguing colour explosion from Japan in the form of Noro. You could not buy Noro at that time in Finland, so I bravely ordered my own 8 skeins directly from the manufacturer. The moment my skeins arrived glittering in silk and wool in the shades of smoke, denim, algae, jade and forest, I saw my magnificient scarf in my mind. Soon I'll be able to wear it, I'll cast on in an instant.

Meni päivä, viikko, kuukausi, toinen ja kolmaskin. En tullut aloittaneeksi, tuli aina muuta neulottavaa. Kauniit ja hanakat Noro-keräni istuivat silkkipaperipesässään hiljaisina. Clapotis alkoi menettää viehätystään. Tuli uusia huivimalleja, tuli uusia, vieläkin kauniimpia lankoja.

A day passed, then a week, then a month, and another, and a third one. I never got into casting on, there was always something else to be knitted. My beautiful and eager Noro skeins sat in their silk paper nest quietly. Clapotis started to loose its charm. There were new scarf patterns around, and new, even more beautiful yarns. 

Sitten kuvaan tuli mukaan Jared Flood ja hänen Noro-huivinsa. Siinä se on! Noro täytyy raidoittaa, jotta sen väriloisto pääsee kunnolla oikeuksiinsa. Tarvitsen Noroa myös vastaväreissä, ja itse asiassa, voisin oikeastaan tarvita jonkinlaista villatakkia tai kietaisujakkua piristämään ikuista mustat-farkut-ja-musta-teepaita -univormuani.

Then came Jared Flood and his Noro scarf into the picture. That's it, I said! Noro needs to be paired with something in order to be lit in its full glory! I need a contrasting yarn and, actually, what I need is some sort of a wrap or cardigan to spice up my ever so black jeans-and-tee combo outfit. 

Jaredin inspiroimana aloin etsiä sopivaa ohjetta. Eipä onnistukaan, totesin pian, on pakko edetä oman pään mukaan. Onneksi olin Jaredin ohella 'keksinyt' myös Barbara G. Walkerin ja hänen ylhäältä alas -metodinsa. Tässä on täydellinen pari, tuumin, ja aloin laskea raglanlisäyksiä, helman pituuksia ja kaula-aukon leveyksiä. Kävin ostamassa helsinkiläisestä lankakaupasta lisää Noroa, tällä kertaa 9 kallisarvoista kerää liekehtivissä punaisen sävyissä. Loin silmukat Väriterapia-jakkuuni 30. syyskuuta 2009.

Inspired by Jared, I started to search for patterns. No luck there, I noticed, must make my own. Luckily,  along with Jared, I had also 'invented' Barbara G. Walker and her top-down method. What a perfect match, I thought, and started to calculate the raglan increases, hem lengths and collar widths. I went to a local yarn shop to by some more Noro and returned with 9 expensive skeins, this time in the shade of flaming red. I casted on for my Colour Therapy coat on the 30th September 2009.

Mutta niin siinä kävi taas, että jossakin juuri ennen helmaa ja hihoja, ihana jakkuni unohtui yhä uudestaan ja uudestaan Joensuun torilta ostamaani pärekoriin. Kuten ennenkin, aina tuli jotain muuta neulottavaa, nopeaa ja tarpeellista. Väriterapiani kurkki koristaan ja odotti. Ja odotti. Ja odotti.

But so it went again that at some phase, just before I would have finished the hem or the sleeves, my beautiful coat sat on the bottom of its dedicated shingle basket that I had bought from the Joensuu market for ever longer periods. As always, there was always something more important to be knitted, something quicker and more needed. My Colour Therapy peeked from its basket and waited. And waited. And waited.

Tänään jakkuni on vihdoin valmis. Kiitos viimeisestä puristuksesta kuuluu Ravelryn Lankalaatikko-ryhmälle, jossa innostuimme saattamaan UFOt maailmaan eli viimeistelemään keskeneräisiä projekteja maaliskuun aikana. Tänään on 28. maaliskuuta 2011. Pärikori on tyhjä. Norokerät ovat kadonneet. Ja minulla on takki, josta meinasi tulla huivi.

Today my coat is finally finished. The last push owes to the Lankalaatikko ('Yarn box') group at Ravelry. We had a group effort to finish our UFOs during March 2011. Today, it's March the 28th 2011. The shingle basket is empty. The Noro skeins are gone. And I have a coat that was just about to become a scarf.

On the road

Viikonlopuksi tuli äkkilähtö Lontooseen, kuopus pyrkii sinne opiskelemaan ja yliopiston kutsu haastatteluun ja portfolion esittelyyn tuli viikon varoitusajalla. Hän halusi minut mukaansa, joten räjäytin eläkesäästötilini, ostin vähemmän edulliset lentoliput ja nappasin mukaan työn alla olevan Circular Shrug -nutun. Neulon sitä jo varmaan yli vuoden 'marinoituneesta' Rowanin Kid Silk Haze -langasta.

I was on a hasty trip to London over the weekend. My youngest has applyed to a local university and they invited her to come over for an interview and to show her portfolio but gave only a week's notice. She wanted me with her, so I exploded my pension budget, bought the not-so-cheap flight tickets, and grabbed the Circular Shrug project with me; I knit it with Rowan's Kid Silk Haze that has been 'marinated' for over a year.

Nuttu oli hyvä matkaneule: kevyt kuljettaa ja helppotekoista kuin mikä. Ainoa ongelma oli langan väri. Tumma mustaherukan sävy imee kaiken valon, ja jos ei ollut tarkkana, 1o, 1n -pohjainen puolipatentti tuppasi menemään vähän väliä pois rytmistä.

The shrug was a really good on-the-road project: very light to carry and really easy to work on. The only problem came with the shade of the colour. The dark blackcurrant colour doesn't reflect any light, so I needed to be really careful not to mess up with the stitches even though the pattern is a simple k1p1 based mock ribbing.

Saa nähdä, mitä tästä tulee, oletettavasti kuitenkin jonkinlainen kepeä villatakki yöpaidan topin päällä pidettäväksi. Malli on mielenkiintoinen, taiteltava hässäkkä. Lankaa on yhteensä 3 kerää, 1,5 kerää on nyt käytetty, ja haluan nuttuun myös hihat. Toivottavasti lanka riittää.

Let's see what this project will turn into. I'm aiming at getting a light, soft and airy sort of a cardigan to be worn over the tank top of my pajamas. The pattern is interesting as it's basically a rectangular that will be folded into a garment. I have 3 balls of Kid Silk Haze, and a half has been already used, and I want to make sleeves as well. I just hope not to run out of yarn.

Lontoo oli ihanasti ennallaan. Kevät oli jo saapunut, ensimmäiset kukat ja linnunlaulu ilahduttivat ja piristivät. Shoppailla en ehtinyt, mitä nyt äkkiä kotimatkalla pistäydyimme valtavassa Westfieldin kauppakeskuksessa hakemassa uutta luettavaa. Foylesin kirjakauppa ei valitettavasti myy lehtiä, eikä Heathrown kolmosterminaalin WHSmithiltäkään saa neulelehtiä, joten ne jäivät ensi kertaan. Ja uskokaa tai älkää, Westfieldissä ei ole ainoatakaan lankakauppaa! Tällä reissulla oli kuitenkin tärkeintä olla hyvä, kannustava ja huolehtiva äiti, eikä niinkään tehokas neuleshoppaaja. Sen suhteen, miten yliopiston väki suhtautui lapsen cv:hen ja portfolioon, olimme vakuuttuneita, että minun lanka- ja neulelehtishoppailuuni tulee Lontoossa runsaasti uusia tilaisuuksia.

London was wonderful as always. The spring had already arrived there, the first spring flowers were blooming and the birds were singing which cheered me up a lot. I didn't have time to do any shopping, but on the way to our London home, we popped in the vast Westfield mega mall to grab some new books. Unfortunately, Foyles bookstore doesn't sell any magazines, and the WHSmith shop at Heathrow Terminal 3 doesn't carry any knitting magazines, so I had to leave that for the next visit. And believe it or not, Westfield does not have a single yarn shop! This time, however, my job was to be a good, supportive and encouraging mother rather than an efficient knitter-shopper. In terms of how the university reflected on my child's cv and portfolio, we were sure that there'll be plenty of opportunities for me to cover that area in London in the future.

Suuri Knit-Along kirjoneuleurakkani, Kate Daviesin suunnittelema Caller Herrin -myssy, valmistui eilen. Caller Herrin' on Skotlannin murretta ja tarkoittaa tuoretta silliä.

My grand Knit-Along-Project fo January 2011, Caller Herrin' tam by Kate Davies, was finished yesterday. The name Caller Herrin' means fresh herring in Scottish.

Mitään sillisalaattia ei tästä neuleesta kuitenkaan tullut. Malli on hieno, mutta puikkoni ehkä aavistuksen verran liian suuret. Huovutan jättihattuani kuivausrummussa, jos se vaikka vähän kutistuisi hieman vähemmän väljäksi.

Luckily, this project was no herring tartar. The design is excuisite, but my needles were perhaps a bit too large. I'm currently shrinking my gigantic tam in the dryer to see if I could make it less enormous.

Lankavalinta osui nappiin. Työ on tehty kuudella värillä, joista viisi on kaksisäikeisen, 100 % suomenlampaan villasta kehrätyn SeVilla-villalangan luonnollisia lampaanvillan sävyjä. SeVilla tulee Pohjanmaalta, eli tavallaan olen samoissa maisemissa kuin Kate Davies Skotlannissa. Yksi langoista on Villa Laurilan luonnonväristä alpakan ja silkin sekoitetta. Tämä lanka oli vähän ohuempaa kuin villalangat, joten pieni huovutus vain parantaa neulepinnan laatua.

My choice of yarns was spot on. The tam is knitted with six colours, five of which I chose from the palette of natural shades of the SeVilla yarn, a 2-ply 100 % Finnsheep. The yarn comes from the north-west of Finland, so in a way, I have the same setting as Kate Davies has with Scotland. One of the yarns was alpaca silk blend by Villa Laurila in natural light brown. The alpaca blend was a bit thinner than the woollen ones, so a little shrinking will improve the quality of the texture.

Kate Davies on hyvin mielenkiintoinen neulesuunnittelija, ja pidän hänen töistään, koska hänellä on tunnistettava, oma linja siinä, mitä hän tekee, ja hän myös osaa asiansa. Tohtori Davies opettaa amerikkalaista kirjallisuutta Newcastlen yliopistossa, ja hänen tutkimusintresseihinsä kuuluu 1700–1800-luvulla eläneiden naisten kirjoitukset sekä tekstiilien ja materiaalikulttuurin historia. Daviesin Needled-blogi tarjoaa aina runsaasti miellyttävää luettavaa, ja blogin valokuvat menevät suoraan sydämeen.

Kate Davies is a designer worth to keep your eye on. I like her work because she has a recognisable approach to knitting and she also knows what she's doing. Dr. Davies is a senior lecturer of American literature at the University of Newcastle. Her research interests include 18th and 19th century women's writing, textile history and material culture. Her blog Needled always gives plenty of interesting reading, and its photographs go straight to your heart.

Sikäli kun puhe on traditioista ja niiden vaalimisesta, Kate Daviesin neulesuunnitelmat edustavat juuri sellaista lähestymistapaa perinteeseen kuin miten itsekin olen perinteen arvon ymmärtänyt. Perinne on rikkaus, mutta se ei saa olla kahle. Luovan työn aineksia ei tarvitse ottaa kaukaa jos haluaa saada työhönsä merkitysten rikkautta ja omaperäistä ainutkertaisuutta. Lukekaa Daviesin kuvaus Caller Herrinin suunnitteluprosessista, niin ymmärrätte mitä tarkoitan.

Pertaining to the topic of traditions and preserving heritage, Kate Davies's knit designs represent exactly the approach that I myself subscribe to when the value of tradition is at issue. Tradition is a richness, but is shouldn't chain you up. The elements required for creative work needn't be gathered from afar in order to make the work rich and original in meaning. Read her description of the design process of the Caller Herrin' tam, so you'll get what I mean.

Ihana Terra-huivi on valmis! Malli on Jared Floodin eli Brooklyn Tweed -brändilla toimivan newyorkilaisen suunnittelijan. Brooklyn Tweed on noussut neuleskenessä aikamoiseen kulttimaineeseen, eikä siinä mitään, hänen ohjeensa ovat erittäin ammattitaitoisesti kirjoitettuja, tyylikkäästi designattuja ja itse mallitkin ovat kiehtovia. Mitä muuta neuloja voisi toivoa?

My lovely Terra shawl is ready! The pattern is designed by the well-known Brooklyn Tweed a.k.a Jared Flood. His brand has received quite a cult reputation in the knit scene and that's quite all right: his patterns are very proficiently written, their lay-out is always stylish, and the very patterns are intriguing. What else could a knitter ask for?

Noh, ehkä vähän vähemmän hössötystä ja hypeä. Terraa oli kiva neuloa, mutta ei tuossa kolmionmallisessa, ainaoikein-neuleella ja helpolla pitsikuviolla somistetussa huivissa ollut mitään ihmeellistä. Ihan kiva. Huivista tuli kuitenkin hieno, kiitos aivan käsittämättömän ihanan langan, joka on lietolaisen Honkarinteen tilan 100 % suomenlampaan karitsanvillaa. Ostin ennen joulua kaksi vyyhtiä heidän kojustaan Tuomaan markkinoilta Helsingin Esplanadinpuistosta. Lanka loppui kuitenkin kesken, ja ystävällisesti he lähettivät minulle sitä lisää, samalla kertaa myös luonnonvalkeaa. Lanka on kuohkeaa, pehmeää, muttei höttöä, ja sen vahvuus on noin 200 m / 100 g (arvioni vyyhdin painon ja kierrosmäärän perusteella). Suosittelen! "Support your local dealer" on mottoni ollut iät ja ajat, nyt on aivan superkatetta toitottaa tätä maailmallekin.

Well, perhaps I'd prefer a little less fuss and hype. Terra was an entertaining and relaxing project to work on, but there was really nothing spectacular about the triangular-shaped shawl design embellished with some basic garter stitch ridges and lace edgings. It was okay. Nevertheless, my shawl turned out to be just wonderful, thanks to the yarn which is out of this world. It's produced by a Finnish small farm based in Lieto and the wool is 100 % baby Finnsheep. I bought 2 skeins of this treasure from the booth at the Christmas Fair held in the Esplanade park in the Helsinki city centre. I ran out of it, but they kindly sent me some more, and I took the advantage of ordering the same yarn also in natural white. The yarn is feathery soft without being fluffy; the yardage is about 200 meters per 100 grams (calculated on the basis of the skein weight and yarn rounds in the skein). Warmly recommended! For ages, my motto has been "Support your local dealer". This time it's oh so easy to trumpet this out to everyone!

Maasta, maailmasta, maanläheisyydestä, juurista ja paikallisuudesta kun puhutaan, niin ostinpa kesken lankapaastoni myös Petäjävedellä toimivalta pieneltä Utunaltakin ihanaa suomalaisugrilaista Nutu-sukkalankaa. Nyt teen vihreästä Lempi-sävystä itselleni sukkia, tuo tumma terrakotta on nimeltään Lohtu. Vaikka kuva onkin ylivalottunut, voiko jotain näin sytyttävän ihanaa ollakaan!

Speaking of Terra, the earth, roots, locality, and the world, I also went out and bought - in the middle of my buy-no-yarn fast (!) - some Fenno-Ugric Nutu sock yarn from Utuna located in Petäjävesi.  I casted on for a pair of socks in green, the name of the shade is Lempi (in English something like love, fancy, and affection). The dark terracotta shade is called Lohtu (condolence). Despite the overexposed photo, aren't they just fascinating?

Vihdoin se on valmis. Lucy Sweetlandin suunnittelema Adeline-villatakki valmistui pari päivää uuden vuoden jälkeen. Työ valmistui oikeastaan jo ennen joulua, mutta viimeistelyyn kuten esimerkiksi langanpäiden päättelyyn, hihojen istutukseen, vyölenkkien ja taskujen asemointiin, pesuun ja blokkaukseen meni oma aikansa. Kuvista tuli harmittavan huonoja, koska sää on (taas) niin kovin kehno ja hämärä.

It is finally ready. I finished the Adeline coat designed by Lucy Sweetland a few days after the New Year. Actually, I had knitted everything by Christmas but as always, all the finishing stuff such as weaving in the ends, seaming, placing pockets and belt holders washing, and blocking took its time. Unfortunately, the photos came out bad because the weather is (again) so cloudy, dingy, and snowy.

Tässä projektissa meni oikeastaan koko syksy. Tein ensin hihat, sitten loput kappaleet. Hihoissa oli hyvä testata omaa käsialaa, koska oikean koon määrityksessä oli hieman hankaluuksia. Silmukkamäärät täsmäsivät, kerrosmäärät eivät. Otin leveyssuunnassa pienimmän koon, mutta tein pituusmitat lähinnä omaa kokoani olevan version mukaisesti (rinnanympärys 40.5 tuumaa).

This project took almost the whole autumn. I started with the sleeves, then I proceeded with the other parts. The sleeves gave a good opportunity to test my gauge as I had some difficulties to determine the right size. My stitch count was OK, my row count was not. I chose to knit the smallest size available as to stitch amounts, but according to my own size (bust circumference 40.5 ") when it came to length measurements.

Langaksi valitsin Villa Laurilan Gotti-langan, jossa on 40 % gotlannin turkislampaan villaa ja loput kainuunharmasta. Gotlanninlammas on mielenkiintoinen villatuttavuus. Neulos on sanalla sanoen rotevaa. Adelineni tuntuu karkeahkolta, pörreältä, hieman kutiavalta ja uutuudenjäykältä, mutta oletettavasti takkini on hyvin kestävä, eikä hirveän painava ja todella lämmin.

My yarn choice for this project was a Finnish speciality produced by a small farm Villa Laurila. Their Gotti is a mixture of Gotland Pelt and an original Finnish breed Kainuunharmas. Gotti was a very interesting experience to knit with. The texture is, with one word, robust. My Adeline feels a bit rough and furry, a bit itchy and stiff, but presumably it won't easily wear off and it's really warm.

Adelinen neulominen tarjosi pitkästä aikaa oikeastaan aika hienon matkan käsinneulonnan perusteisiin. Ohje oli kirjoitettu taitavasti, mutta siinä oli näennäisestä yksinkertaisuudesta huolimatta aika lailla haasteita. Miten valitsen oikean koon? Miten sovellan takin mittoja omiin mittoihini? Miten teen lisäyksiä melkoisen kiemuraiseen kohoneuleeseen? Miten tehdään helma, jos ohjeen tubular cast on rullautuu koko ajan vaikka mitä tekisi? Miten istutetaan hihat? Miten muotoillaan shaalikaulus kun oma silmukkamäärä ei täsmää ohjeen kanssa? Miten tehdään lyhennettyjä kerroksia?

The Adeline project gave me, a for a change, rather a fine journey into the basics of hand knitting. The pattern was proficiently written, but entailed a few challenges despite the apparent simplicity of the design. How to choose the right size? How to modify the given stitch and row counts according to your own body measurements? How to increase into an intricate cable pattern? How to do the hem if the tubular cast on used in the pattern keeps rolling no matter what I do? How to form of a shawl collar when your stitch amount doesn't match with the pattern? How to knit short rows?

Olen vielä hieman pyörällä päästäni matkasta Adelinen kanssa. Adeline on juuri nyt ylläni, teemme tuttavuutta, kehoni hakee muotojaan takin sisältä. Olo on lämmin ja tyytyväinen, ehkä vähän hermostunutkin. Tällainen tästä nyt tuli, ehkä vähän liian pitkä, kauluksestakin tuli ehkä vähän ylisuuri. Tervetuloa kuitenkin taloon, Adeline! Kiva kun tulit garderoobiini.

I'm still somewhat overwhelmed by my journey with Adeline. I'm wearing it now while writing this blog post. We're making acquaintance with each other; my body seeks its space inside the jacket. I feel warm and happy, a bit nervous as well. Okay, this is what I accomplished, a coat perhaps a bit too long with a collar a bit oversized. Welcome anyway, Adeline! Nice to have you in my wardrobe.

Venytä! / Stretch!

Tammikuu 2011 on alkanut hiljaisesti, vähän verkalleen. Yritän päästä kiinni arkeen, työhöni, kirjoittamiseen. Uuden vuoden lupauksia en tehnyt muuta kuin sen, että yritän elää siivosti ja säästäväisesti. Neulonnassa se tarkoittaa lankavaraston tyhjentämistä, langan ostelusta pidättäytymistä ja muutakin nuukailua. Venytä penniä, komensin itseäni, niin saat taas pitkän ja rahahuolettoman kevätkauden ilman pakkokeikkoja sinne sun tänne. Vähän on enemmän.

January 2011 has begun silently, at a leisurely pace. I'm having some difficulties to get going with my work after the long holidays. I didn't make any New Year's resolutions except that I promised to try to be good and live parsimoniously. In terms of knitting, this means to continue stashbusting, to refrain myself from yarn shopping, and to be thrifty in all possible ways. Stretch your pennies, I said to myself, so you will get a long and carefree spring semester without the need to take in the typical freelancer's crap jobs. Less is more.

Lupasin venytellä myös itseäni. Olen harrastanut monta vuotta Pilatesta, ja neuloin varastoni sukkalankajämistä lämmittävät sukat. Sukat käyvät tietysti myös joogaan, stretchingiin ja mihin tahansa kengättömään nautiskeluun. Tämän Ravelry-linkin takaa löytyy pieni ohje pdf-muodossa, jos haluat soveltaa omiin langanloppuihisi. Ohje on kyllä liian juhlallinen sana tässä yhteydessä, kunhan nyt laitoin muistiin silmukka- ja kerrosmäärät.

I also promised myself to stretch myself. I've done Pilates for many years now, and I knitted a pair of warm-up socks from the sock yarn remains of my stash. The socks are, of course, fine in yoga, stretching or any other enjoyable, shoe-free exercising. The free Ravelry pattern is in Finnish only, but there's really nothing to it. The sock is just a tube with a hole in place of the heel.
