Merellisiä sävyjä / Shades of sea

Istuskelen täällä maailman lempipaikassani ja katselen merelle. Itämeri näyttää tänään siniseltä, kimaltelevalta, kuohuvalta ja raikkaan vihertävältä.

I am sitting at my favourite spot in the world and I am looking at the sea. Today, the Baltic Sea looks like this: blue, glimmering, foamy and freshly greenish.

Whilst sitting, I am working on a little in-between knitting project: socks for my dear aunt in Copenhagen who will soon celebrate her anniversary. The colours are derived from her home country, the Finnish flag, of course.

My throne is red, and there is red also in my brand new project bag. It is the silver medalist of the recent Ravelry design competion to celebrate the whopping 2 million Ravelry users.

Täällä Itämeren äärellä on ihanaa olla. Itämeri - the Baltic Sea - on nimeltään myös Lorna's Laces -firman uuden Sportmate-sukkalangan sävy. Oma arvokas vyyhtini saapui Atlantin valtameren takaa parisen viikkoa sitten. Luulenpa tykkääväni tästä langasta neulotuista sukista, jos ei muuten, niin ihan vaan jo nimen takia.

It is so lovely to be here at the Baltic Sea. That is also the name of the shade of Lorna's Laces Sportmate sock yarn. My precious skein arrived from across the Atlantic a couple of weeks ago. I think I shall love the socks knitted from it, if only just because of the name.

I am one of those who perceive the cycle of a year to flow from autumn to spring. The odd and vaguely hovering summer sets itself in between the two, the past and the coming year. Holiday is word for the employees; as a freelancer and a small business owner, I consider holiday as just a moment of complete freedom, however long or short it may then be.

Näissä raameissa tunne elämänhallinnasta ja elämänilosta on ollut pakko oppia pelkistämään hyvin yksinkertaisiin asioihin. Jos sää on hyvä, mene ulos ja juo iltapäiväkahvisi puutarhassa. Within this framework, I've learned to reduce the sense of joy and control of life to base on very simple things. If the weather is good, take your afternoon coffee in the garden. Cook something good. Pat the dog. Notice the first summer visitors on the tree in front of your window. Salute excellence wherever you come across it. Learn the lyrics of a song by heart. Share something valuable.

Olen tässä toukokuussa elänyt aika lailla niin kuin opetan. Tein eilen kesän ensimmäisen raparperipiirakan. Huomasin eräänä iltapäivänä työhuoneeni edessä olevassa puussa leppälinnun. Ostin pari viikkoa sitten taivaallisen upeaa ja ainutlaatuista lankaa kahdelta suomalaiselta käsityöläiseltä. Tapasin eilen kummityttöni ja tutustutin hänet neulonnan maailmaan.

This May, I've pretty much managed to live as I preach. Yesterday, I baked the first rhubarb pie of the season. One day, I noticed a Common Redstart on the tree in front of the window of my study. I bought some unique and heavenly wonderful yarn from two Finnish artesans a couple of weeks ago. I met my goddaughter yesterday and introduced her to the art of knitting.

Greta is knitting; Kiki, the dog, is supervising her progress.
