Aloitin syksyn kunniaksi uuden, vähän isomman työn. Neulon pitkää villatakkia brittiläisen Twilleys of Stamford -lankatehtaan Knitted Long Jacket -ohjeen mukaan (malli nro 9125). Inspiroiduin tähän malliin suosikkini Electric Sheep -podcastin blogista. Ohje on julkaistu myös suomeksi Modassa 4/2011 nimellä Pintaneuleinen jakku (nro 39).

To celebrate autumn, I casted on for a bit bigger project for a change. I'm working on Knitted Long Jacket by Twilleys of Stamford (pattern 9125); it was hinted by my favourite podcaster Electric Sheep in her blog post. 

Sleeves done!
Yarn: Drops Nepal, shade Orange mix

Aloitin hihoista ja ne ovat valmistuneet viikossa. Siis viikossa kaksi hihaa! Ihanaa saada näin nopeasti valmista. Käytän Dropsin Nepal-lankaa, joka tuntuu todella hyvältä. Kierre on sopivan pinkeä, pintaneule nousee hyvin esiin, sileä neule on tasaista kuin itsestään. Ja väri on juuri oikea murrettu oranssi – yksi syksyn 2011 muotiväreistä, muuten.

I started with the sleeves, and I've finished them within a week. Yes, you read it correctly: two sleeves in one week! How fantastic is that! My yarn is Drops Nepal which feels really good. The twist is purky enough to pop out the textured pattern; stockinette stitch is smooth as if out of magic. And the colour, yes, it's the perfect burnt orange, one of the hot fashion colours of the autumn 2011 season, by the way. 



Suomenkielistä Moda-käännöstä harkitseville tiedoksi kuitenkin, että käännöksessä annetut kokovaihtoehdot ja mittapiirustuksen mitat poikkeavat alkuperäisestä ohjeesta. Olen lähettänyt Modan päätoimittajalle sähköpostia, mutta tätä kirjoittaessa en ole saanut mitään kommenttia. Raportoin tästä jo Ravelryssä, mutta tässä vielä oleellinen:
Alkuperäisen ohjeen kokovaihtoehdot (to fit bust): 81 / 86 / 91 / 97 / 102 / 107 cm. Suomenkielisen version kokovaihtoehdot (vartalonympärys):  84 / 90 / 94 / 100 / 106 / 112 cm. Alkuperäisessä ohjeessa on lisäksi valmiin työn mitat (Actual Measurement, at underarm): 87 / 92 / 97 / 103 / 108 / 113 cm.

Suomenkielisessä versiossa on laitettu 1 cm lisää myös takin kokopituuteen, ei kuitenkaan hihan sisäpituuteen. Modassa on lisäksi piirroskuva neuleen mitoista; alkuperäisessä ohjeessa tällaista ei ole. Piirroskuvassa on kuitenkin pieni virhe ainakin hihassa: hihan pituus ennen pyöriötä pitäisi olla 51/52/52/53/53/53 cm; kaaviossa hihamitta on 46/47/47/48/48/48 cm. Tekstissä hihamitta on oikein eli sama kuin alkuperäisen ohjeen tekstissä.

For my Finnish speaking readers, I'd like to point out that the translation gives different measurements for the pattern than the original English version. The bust size is different; likewise, the actual measurement at underarm has not been given at all, but appears to be oddly merged with the bust size. In addition, there's an extra centimeter in the overall length of the jacket, and the scheme of the sleeve gives the length of the sleeve incorrectly although in the text, the sleeve measurements are according to the original. I've emailed the editor of Moda, but so far haven't receive any reply. 

Leselotte by Klein&More

Noh, minulla ei onneksi ole mitään hätää jakkuni kanssa, minä neuloa tikutan englanniksi, ei se ole ollenkaan vaikeaa kun aikansa tutkii koodikieltä ja tarvittaessa googlaa apua. Googlaus voi kyllä vähän vaarallista, Ravelry myös. Ravelryn Finnish Knitters -ryhmässä oli näet jossain vaiheessa puhetta lukemisesta ja neulomisesta yhtä aikaa. Telkkarin katselu on itseltäni sujunut oikein mukavasti, mutta lukeminen ei. Olen pitänyt kirjaa nuottitelineellä ja kokeillut ties mitä systeemejä, mutta jotenkin on tökkinyt sekä lukeminen että neulominen.

Well, things happen, luckily I have the original pattern to follow. I can read knitting patterns in English, and if I run in trouble, I can always google for help. Googling can be dangerous, though, Ravelry as well. Some time ago we had a discussion at the Finnish Knitters group about reading and knitting at the same time. I can effortlessly knit and watch TV, but reading and knitting, well, that hasn't been such as success despite all my attempts to position the book and focus on both it and my hands. 


Vaan nyt pelittää: tilasin Saksan Amazonista Klein& More -designfirman suunnitteleman Leselotten. Aivan ihana ja toimii hyvin! Idea on yksinkertainen: kirja asetellaan tukevaan irtokanteen, ja irtokansi asetellaan pienen säkkituolin tarranauhaan sopivaan kulmaan. Sitten säkkituolia muotoillaan sopivaan asentoon. Leselotteen saa tilattua myös isompia ja pienempiä irtokansia: tuo vakioversio on juuri sopiva tavalliselle, kovakantiselle kaunokirjallisuudelle. Hinta oli kohtuullinen 29,50€ verrattuna erilaisiin, toki hienoihin pro-malleihin, jotka maksavat lähes 200 €.

Now things are all on the roll: I ordered myself a Leselotte bean bag by Klein& More from the German Amazon. It's lovely and it works! The idea is really simple: you set your book into a separate, hard book cover; then you place the cover (with the book) on the velcro stripe of the little bean bag. Then all you have to do is to adjust the angle and knead the bean bag into a good position. Leselotte has bigger and smaller book cover options: the default size is just right for hardcover fiction. The price was reasonable, only 29,50 € (incl. delivery) compared to the pro models that can cost as much as 200 €. 

Lukemista ja neulomista? Kyllä vain, kuulostaa siltä, että minun syksyni on alkanut hienosti. Ja mikäpä kruunaisi syystunnelmani paremmin kuin pala itseleivottua porkkanakakkua.

Reading and knitting? Oh yes, it sounds like my autumn has had a fine start! And what could top my autumn feelings better than a slice of self-made carrot cake.

Porkkanakakku
pohjana Therese Wikströmin ohje kirjasta Makeita unelmia (Helmi Kustannus 2006)
3 munaa
2 dl sokeria
2 dl (auringonkukka)öljyä
150 g karkeaa porkkanaraastetta (raastoin 5 isoa porkkanaa josta tuli n. 8 dl)
1 dl fariinisokeria
4 dl vehnäjauhoja
1 tl leivinjauhetta
1 tl ruokasoodaa
1 tl kanelia
1 dl pähkinärouhetta (rouhin saksanpähkinän sydämiä)

Vatkaa munat ja sokeri vaahdoksi (n. 3 minuuttia). Lisää öljy vähän kerrallaan; sitten loput ainekset.
Kaada taikina voideltuun ja jauhotettuun vuokaan; käytin ø 26 cm irtopohjavuokaa.
Paista uunin alatasolla +175°C n. 45 minuuttia; varmista tikulla, että kakku on kypsä.
Anna jäähtyä, kumoa alustalle, peitä kelmulla ja laita yöksi jääkaappiin. Kuorruta seuraavana päivänä.

Kuorrute
1,5 rasiaa (à 200 g) maustamatonta tuorejuustoa (kevytversiot käyvät hyvin)
0,75 dl tomusokeria
1 rkl vaniljasokeria
2 rkl limemehua (käytin kaupasta saatavaa aitoa limemehua)
Vatkaa ainekset sekaisin ilmavaksi tahnaksi ja peitä kakku valkoiseksi.
Koristele jos ehdit ja jaksat, Therese ehdottaa koristeiksi kauniita kukkia ja marjoja.

Neulo kyynelehtien / Knitting with tears

Pieleen meni! En tähdännyt ihan tällaiseen lopputulokseen, kun ryhdyin väsäämään pientä, kesäistä villatakkia lankakorin pohjalle unohtuneesta hamppulangasta.

Oh no, this is not what I was aiming at when I started to knit a little summer cardigan from a few skeins of hemp yarn that lay forgotten at the bottom of my stash. 

Ajatus oli hyvä, ja työ meni periaatteessa ihan käsikirjoituksen mukaan. Perusohjeena käytin Elizabeth Zimmermannin saumattoman kaarrokevillapaidan ohjetta, joka löytyy mm. kirjasta Knitting without Tears. Mitoituksen pohjana käytin vanhaa huppariani.

The thought behind the project was OK and I can't say that the project failed because of the manuscript. I used Elizabeth Zimmermann's guidelines for a seamless yoked sweater that have been published e.g. in her book Knitting without Tears. The measurements were took from my old hooded sweater.

Tein ensin hihat, sitten vartalo-osan. Sen jälkeen liitin hihat vartaloon, laskin kainaloon jäävät silmukat ja yhdistin loput kaarrokkeeksi.

First, I knitted the sleeves, then the body. The next step was to attach the sleeves to the body: I counted the number of stitches to be left under the arms and joined the rest into a yoke.

Sitten alkoivat vaikeudet. Lanka loppui, piti tilata lisää. Se oli eri värjäyserää, ja sävyero oli valtava. Alkuperäinen lanka oli kauniin hopeanharmaata, uusi lanka oli tumman siniharmaata. Purin takaisinpäin, ja ryhdyin raidottamaan lankoja; ajattelin, että viime kädessä valmiin villatakin värjäys vaikkapa mustaksi kuittaa ongelman.

This is where the trouble started. I ran out of yarn and had to buy some more. The new yarn was from a different dye lot, and the difference in the shades was enormous. The original yarn had a lovely silver grey shade; the new yarn was darker and more blue. I ripped the cardi a little back to stripe them and thought that, well, I can always dye the finished cardi black if the stripes are too visible.

Jatkoin kaarrokkeen kanssa EZ:n ohjeiden mukaan. Koko kaarrokkeen korkeus oli mittojen mukaan 24 cm, joten puoliväliin asti piti mennä kaventamatta, sitten kaventaa silmukoista kolmasosa 12, 18 ja 24 cm:n kohdalla. Kun kaarroke oli tarpeeksi korkea, piti nostaa vielä niskaa lyhennetyin kerroksin. Sitten koukin vielä silmukat kaula-aukon reunoista ja neuloin vähän viimeistelevää ainaoikein-reunusta. Helppoa kuin mikä, koesovitukset hämärässä huoneessa näyttivät ihan mukiinmeneviltä. Ja voihan nenä kuinka iloisena päättelinkään viimeisiä silmukoita.

I continued with the yoke as EZ instructs the knitter. The length of the yoke was supposed to be 24 cm, so I was to knit 12 cm without any decreases and then decrease 1/3 of the stitches at 12, 18 and 24 cm. Having done this, I lifted the neck a couple of centimeters with short rows. Then I picked up some stitches form the neckline and finished the cardi off with some rows of garter stitch. Oh, how easy it was, and the few try-ons looked just fine in the shady room. And oh boy, how pleased I was when I binding off the last stitches.

Lopputulos on kuitenkin aivan kamala. Tein kaarrokkeen aina-oikein-neuleena ja sehän pullottaa ulospäin kuin mikäkin pussi. Olisi pitänyt vaihtaa kaarrokkeeseen pienemmät puikot. Sävyero lankojen välillä on aivan hirveä. Hamppu tuntui kovalta neuloessa, mutta tuntuu vielä ikävämmältä ihoa vasten. Kaarroke on niskasta aivan liian pitkä, joten yksinkertaisesta pitsineuleesta tekemäni reikäraidat asettuvat ihan vinoon. Voi itkujen kevät, mikä ohari! Kaiken huipuksi huomasin jo työtä tehdessäni, ettei hamppulanka kestä paljoa purkamista, vaan säikeet avautuvat ja lanka hajoaa sietämättömäksi narukimpuksi.

The result is terrible. I made the yoke with garter stitch which makes the yoke much wider than the body resulting in a awful, baggy top. I should have changed into smaller needle size for the yoke. The shade difference is horrible. Hemp was hard on the hands while on the needles, but it feels even more unpleasant against the skin. The yoke is far too long from the neck so that the lace stripes go all slanted. Oh shoot what a miss! On the top of all I noticed already while knitting the damned thing that the hemp yarn doesn't like to be ripped. It unravels its plies and breaks down into a bunch of thread. 

Roskiin lentää tämä kokeilu. Mitä ajan ja rahan haaskausta! Ja mitä opin tästä? Noh, ainakaan ei enää ikinä hamppua minulle, kiitos. Ja se sisäinen Elizabeth Zimmermannkin saa vielä olla hukassa ihan rauhassa. Neulon loppuvuoden vain satavarmoja sukkia, asusteita ja villatakkeja oikeilla ohjeilla. Neulominenhan on niin ihana harrastus, vai mitä...?

This experiment goes straight to the trash. What a waste of time and money! And did I learn anything? Well, for one thing, hemp yarn never again, thank you very much.  And on my behalf, my inner Elizabeth Zimmermann may stay undiscovered for a while. I'll knit nothing but infallible socks and accessories, and cardigans with real patterns for the rest of the year. Knitting is such a fantastic hobby, isn't it...?

Sukkasatoa korjaamaan / Sock Harvesting

Vihdoin olen ajan tasalla neuleskenessä: Sukkasato 2011 on täällä taas, ja kerrankin myös minä olen mukana! Oma 'osastoni' Perunalaari on mitä sopivin, ainakin mitä jaloon itäsuomalaiseen nenämalliini tulee.

Sukkasadon korjaaminen alkaa 1.9.2011, ja ensimmäiseksi työksi otan Lorilee Beltmanin huovutetut tossut (Ravelry-linkki Felted loafer slippers -ohjeeseen). Cast On -podcastin Brenda Dane kehui näitä maasta taivaaseen, joten täytyy kokeilla, onnistuvatko tossut myös minun käsissäni.

Sock Harvest 2011 is here! For once, I know what's going on in the Finnish knitting scene, and I'm in! My home base is Perunalaari (a.k.a Potato Bin) which is most suitable with reference to my 'noble' profile and my potato nose that came with the Karelian genes.


Sock Harvest 2011 will launch on 1st September. My first project will be Lorilee Beltman's Felted loafer slippers (Ravelry link). Brenda Dane gave such a positive review of this pattern in her recent Cast On podcast episode, so I'm very curious see whether the Felted Slippers will be a success also in my hands. 

Elähdyttävä elokuu / The Augmenting August

Suomen kielessä, ja varmaan muissakin pohjoisissa kulttuuripiireissä, on merkillinen tapa toivottaa touko-kesäkuussa "Hyvää kesää!". Lomakausi on silloin edessä, ihmisten tiet ovat toviksi eroamassa. Toivotus tarkoittaa ilmeisesti jotakin sen suuntaista, että "Toivottavasti kesäsi on onnistunut, kesäsuunnitelmasi toteutuvat ja sääkin suosii!". Nyt on ihana, elähdyttävä ja uuden alkua lupaileva elokuu, pian alkavat koulut ja uudet työ- ja harrastuskuviot, mutta eipä tee mieli toivottaa kellekään "Hyvää syksyä!". Mistähän johtunee?

In the Finnish language, and perhaps in other nordic cultures as well, there is a peculiar tradition to wish everyone "Good summer!" in May-June. At that time, the holiday season is ahead of us, and our roads are about to departure for a while. The greeting bears a meaning of something like: "I wish that your summer will be a successful one, that you will be able to carry out your plans for this summer, and that the weather will be lovely, too." Now the wonderful, augmenting and uplifting August has arrived. Soon the schools will start, and we all will be faced by new and exciting projects both at work and home. However, I don't feel like wishing "Good Autumn!" to anyone. I wonder why. 

Tämä kesän ja syksyn toivotteluero tuli mieleeni, kun mietin, olikohan kesäni tänä vuonna hyvä vai huono; mitähän olen mahtanut saada aikaiseksi ihanina kesäkuukausina. Kesäksi tulee aina listattua kaikenlaista: menen matkalle, osallistun jollekin kesäkurssille, luen nuo kirjat, ja teen tuon ja tuon kesäkäsityön. Minulle tämä kesä oli jotenkin ovela: se vain kului. En pitänyt varsinaista lomaa, tein omia tutkimus- ja kirjoitustöitäni tavalliseen malliin. Silti kesäni oli hyvin rentouttava.

This difference between our greeting habits between the summer and the autumn came to my mind when I got myself assessing my achievements during my own summer months. Was my summer good or bad? People tend to make lists for their holiday: this summer, I will make a trip, participate in an educative summer school, read these books, and make this and that summer craft project. For me, this summer was somehow sly. It just passed. I had no proper holiday, I worked with my research and writing projects as usual, but still my summer was rather relaxing. 

Ehkä rentoutumisen salaisuus oli osaltaan juuri siinä, että kun varsinaista lomaa ei ollut, ei ollut mitään pakkoa toteuttaa mitään suunnitelmiakaan. Osasinpa kerrankin päästää hetkeksi irti suorittamisesta. Heinäkuussa osallistuin kylläkin viikon maalauskurssille puolisoni kanssa Helsingin Suomenlinnassa. Se oli ihanaa: virkistävän raskasta ja ajattelua laajentavaa. Muuten vaan istua kökötin työhuoneessa, neuloin, kävin maalla saunomassa, tuijotin merelle, hoidin kukkapenkkiä.

Perhaps one of the keys to a relaxing summer was that, as I had no 'proper' holiday, I had accordingly no need to carry out any particular holiday plans. For once,  I succeeded in letting go of the obligation of achievement. In July, I did participate in one-week painting course with my hubby at Suomenlinna. That was just lovely: refreshingly hard work and mind-blowing. But otherwise all I did was that I scribbled in my den as usual, knitted, bathed in the sauna of the country cottage and stared into the sea, took care of my garden. 

En urakoinut kesäsaavutuksia. Olen levännyt ja valmis edessä olevan syksyyn. Kukkia riittää villan värjäykseen. Lankalaariin unohtunut hamppulanka on muuntumassa jonkinlaiseksi villatakkiviritykseksi. Tervetuloa elähdyttävä elokuu!

This summer, I didn't exert myself to achieve anything. Now, I feel rested and I'm ready to face the autumn. I have plenty of flowers to dye some yarn with. The hemp yarn that I had forgotten in the stash is on the needles and transforming itself into a cardigan. You are so welcome, the augmenting August!

Tässä nykyisessä, tukevassa keski-iän olomuodossa on se hyvä puoli, että minulle on vihdoin kirkastunut se, millaisia vaatteita minun kannattaa hankkia, tehdä ja käyttää (ja millaisia ei ...). Tykkään kovasti neulevaatteista, koska ne ovat mukavan joustavia eivätkä vaadi silittämistä ja muuta jatkuvaa huoltoa, ja tykkään pitkistä linjoista, koska ne rakentavat puuttuvia linjoja ja antavat eleganssia melko simppeliin pukeutumistyyliini. Kun näin ensimmäiset kuvat Veera Välimäen Sprout-takista, tiesin heti, että tuossa on minulle aivan täydellinen neulemalli.

The good side in my current state, being comfortably and cozily middle-aged, is that I've finally learned what kind of clothes to knit, buy and wear (and what not to...). I truly like knitted garments, because they are snug and stretchy and they don't require constant ironing or other maintenance. I also like long lines, because they fit to my body shape and give style and elegance to my rather simple attire. When I saw the first pictures of Veera Välimäki's Sprout cardigan, I knew immediately that this would be The Cardi to make for me. 

Tänään oli se neulojan suuri päivä, kun sain oman Itu-takkini napit ommeltua, takin niskaani ja valokuvaajan paikalle. Mikä ihana takki tästä tulikaan! Istuvuus on täydellinen, malli on supertäydellinen, ja langan tuntu on aivan ihana. Tälle on taatusti käyttöä erilaisissa kesäisissä pikkujuhlissa. Langan kullankimalteinen sävy antaa lisäjuhlavuutta. Sävy on kyllä vähän vaikea: jossain valossa kulta muuttuu likaisenkeltaiseksi, vähän vihertäväksikin, joissain toisessa valossa kulta alkaa oikein loistaa. Lankaa jäi vähän yli, joten saatanpa tekaista vielä pienen laukun jakkuni kaveriksi.

Today was the great day in a knitter's life when I sew in the buttons, dressed the cardi on, and got my newest project photographed. What a wonderful jacket my Sprout turned into! The fit is perfect, the model is super perfect, and the feel of the yarn just sensational. I will have plenty of use for this one at the various summer parties and occations. The golden sheen of the yarn adds extra opulence to the jacket. The shade is a bit difficult, though. In some light, gold turns into dirty mustardy shade, even a bit greenish; in some other light, the gold just gleams and shimmers. I still have some yarn, so I may knit a small purse or a bag to go with the jacket. 

Napeiksi löytyi 4 erilaista kultanappia äidin vintage-nappiperinnöstä. Hienot Guessin kultasandaalini ja kultakynsilakka tulevat olemaan takuuvarmat lisämausteet.

I found an odd set of four golden buttons from my late mother's vintage button stash. My posh golden sandals by Guess and a bottle of golden nail polish will be guaranteed accessories.

Kolme kuukautta neulomista on nyt takanapäin. Tuloksena on hieno jakku, kiitos Veeran loistavan ohjeen. Kuinka palkitsevaa neulominen voi parhaimmillaan ollakaan!

Three months of on-and-off knitting is now behind me. I have made a lovely jacket, thanks to Veera's outstanding design and pattern writing. How rewarding can knitting be at its best!

Anni ja neulova hiiri / Anni and the knitting mouse

Rakas villapaitani, Suvi Simolan suunnittelema Baby Cables and Big Ones Too, vaati hieman korjaustoimenpiteitä. Venemuotoinen kaula-aukko oli venähtänyt sen verran laajaksi, että paita roikkui päälläni jo aika rumasti. Poimin silmukat kaula-aukosta, neuloin muutaman sentin matkan 2o2n-joustinneuletta, taitoin reunuksen kaksinkertaiseksi, päättelin ja kiinnitin reunan samalla luontireunaan. Voilà, villapaitani oli taas kuin uusi. Maalla kun oltiin, jätin paidan yöksi kuistille tuolin selkämykselle sateen suojaan.

My much loved and used pullover, the Baby Cables and Big Ones Too pattern by Suvi Simola, needed some mending. The boatneck shape of the neckline had stretched far too large: the pullover hanged on me really unflatteringly. I picked up the stitches, knitted a few centimeters k2p2 ribbing, folded it double, cast off and attached the trim to the seamline. Voila, my pullover was reborn to be loved and used again good as new. As we were at the summer cottage, I left my pullover on the chair's backrest for the night, on the porch sheltered from rain.

Seuraavana aamuna join aamukahvia kuistilla kaikessa rauhassa, kun huomasin jotakin kauheaa. Villapaidan hihaan oli ilmestynyt yön aikana suuri reikä! Maassa oli hieman langan nöyhtää, mutta muita jälkiä ei näkynyt. Reikä oli nakerrettu niin tarkasti, ettei syyllinen voinut olla kukaan muu kuin hiiri.

The next morning I was having my coffee in peace and quiet when I suddenly noticed something terrible. Someone, or something, had nibbled a large hole in the sleeve of the pullover during the night! The hole was so round and neat that the villain could be no other than a mouse. 

Someone has been eating my sleeve!

Voi sentään! Juuri kun olin iloinnut uudestisyntyneestä villapaidastani, oli kaivettava puikot taas esiin ja korjattava hihakin. Leikkasin kalvosimen reunan irti ja purin työtä ehjään riviin asti. Oli onni onnettomuudessa, että villapaita oli neulottu ylhäältä alas: hihansuu oli helppo neuloa uudelleen.

Oh dear! Just as I had celebrated the rebirth of my pullover, I had to dig out the needles again and fix the sleeve as well. I cut the edge of the cuff away and ripped off the damaged part. How lucky I was to have knitted this one from the top down: the cuff wasn't going to be that hard to fix. 

Koska minulla on vilkas mielikuvitus ja uskon vakaasti erilaisiin metsänhenkiin ja Beatrix Potter -maailman kaltaiseen salattuun metsän elämään, jätin purkujätteet seuraavaksi yöksi kuistin lattialle. Ajattelin, että jos herra Hiiri tarvitsee rouvalleen hyvää villalankaa, voin aivan hyvin jättää oman lankasilppuni heille suosiolla. Vaihtokauppana saavat omat neuleeni olla heiltä vastedes rauhassa.

As I have a very lively imagination and I strongly believe in pixies, elves and other creatures who occupy the forest and in a Beatrix Potter kind of secret world of the wildlife. I left the yarn leftovers on the porch floor. I thought that if Mr. Mouse is in the need of good wool for his wife, surely I can trade my leftovers for peace with my own woollies in the future. 

Ja niin siinä kävi, että seuraavana aamuna langanloppukasa oli hävinnyt jäljettömiin. Kuistin lattialle oli pudonnut vain pari nöyhtää herra Hiiren kottikärryistä. Nyt on hiiriperheen talvi turvattu: siellä kolossaan rouva ja herra Hiiri nyt neuloivat pikkuruisia villapaitoja ja sukkia vauvoilleen. Ja tämän jutun lopetus on neulojalle opetus: hiirikin vie parasta, Suomen Kainuunharmasta!

And so it was that the next morning the whole pile of yarn had vanished. I could only notice some odd bits of fluff that had fallen from Mr. Mouse's wheelbarrow. The Mouse family was now secured for the winter. I could see them, Mr. and Mrs. Mouse, sitting comfortably in their cozy hole and knitting tiny pullovers and socks for their babies. And as always, here too is a lesson to be learned: What's best for you is known by mice, Kainuu grey is worth the prize.

I am one of those who perceive the cycle of a year to flow from autumn to spring. The odd and vaguely hovering summer sets itself in between the two, the past and the coming year. Olen tässä toukokuussa elänyt aika lailla niin kuin opetan. Tein eilen kesän ensimmäisen raparperipiirakan. Huomasin eräänä iltapäivänä työhuoneeni edessä olevassa puussa leppälinnun. Ostin pari viikkoa sitten taivaallisen upeaa ja ainutlaatuista lankaa kahdelta suomalaiselta käsityöläiseltä. Tapasin eilen kummityttöni ja tutustutin hänet neulonnan maailmaan.

This May, I've pretty much managed to live as I preach. Yesterday, I baked the first rhubarb pie of the season. One day, I noticed a Common Redstart on the tree in front of the window of my study. I bought some unique and heavenly wonderful yarn from two Finnish artesans a couple of weeks ago. I met my goddaughter yesterday and introduced her to the art of knitting.

Huu, mikä huhtikuu! Tekemistä riittää, jopa siinä määrin, että työ ja muu elämä ovat vakavasti alkaneet haitata harrastuksia. Ulkona on ihanaa, peipposet laulavat, ja puutarhan kukkapenkki puskee ylös ensimmäisiä hentoja versojaan. Pitäisi haravoida, tyhjentää kompostia, leikata kuolleita oksia ja karsia pensaita. Ensimmäiset taimikylvöt sain onneksi tehtyä: neljää erilaista chiliä, kahta erilaista kesäkurpitsaa, rosmariinia, timjamia, ja vielä pari pientä pottia kelloköynnöstä. Kaari-ensemblen Stabat mater -konserttikin lähestyy uhkaavasti, ja senkin kanssa on vielä yhtä sun toista puuhaa. Kohta on pääsiäinen, ja sitten on vuodenkierron oma huippukohtani eli vappu!

The awesome April's here! I've been busy with work even to the extent that work and other stuff have severely begun to interfere with my hobbies. The weather is just wonderful, the chaffinches are singing, and my flower beds are pushing up the very first, delicate sprouts. I should go out and rake the lawn, empty the compost, remove dead branches from the trees, and trim the bushes. At least I have already managed to sow the first seeds: chilies of 4 different varieties, 2 varieties of zucchini, some rosmary and thyme, and even a couple of pots of blue Cathedral Bells (Cobaea Scandens). The Easter concert of my choir, Kaari-Ensemble, is on the horizon as well, and I still have plenty to do with that, too. Soon, it will be Easter, and then it will be the 1st of May, my personal peak of the annual cycle.

Kun lämpomittari kipuaa yli nollan, villasukkien ja lapasten neulominen alkaa tuntua hölmöltä. Olenkin siirtynyt huiveihin, sillä ne ovat suhteellisen nopeatekoisia ja niille on käyttöä myös Suomen kesässä. Tällä hetkellä puikoilla on Veera Välimäen suunnittelema Stripe Study Shawl. Teen sitä oranssista ja luonnonvalkeasta PukkIlu-langasta, joka kuuluu Handun tuotteisiin ja on aivan hurmaavaa, ohuehkoksi ja tiukkakierteiseksi kehrättyä suomenlampaan villaa. Stripe Study Shawl -huivini on aivan loppumetreillä. Enää puuttuu parisen senttiä vaaleaa reunakaistaletta ja sitten se on valmis. Malli on suorastaan nerokas, joskin ainaoikeinneuleen vääntäminen alkaa jo vähän puuduttaa.


When the temperature rises above zero, it suddenly feels rather silly to knit socks and mittens. I've taken on knitting shawls instead; they are relatively fast to knit and believe me, they are useful in Finland also in the summer. At the moment, I'm working on Stripe Study Shawl designed by Veera Välimäki. My version is striped with orange and natural white PukkIlu; a fingering weight, tightly spun 100 % Finnsheep produced as a local speciality by Handu. My Stripe Study only misses a couple of more centimeters of the white border and then it will be finished. The pattern is ingenious in its simplicity, although I'm getting a bit bored slogging away the everlasting garter stitch.

Veera Välimäellä on paljon todella kiinnostavia malleja, ja työlistallani ovat ainakin Folded ja Celery. Niihin olisi jo langatkin valmiina. Itse asiassa vähän hävettää. Olen ollut mukamas lankapaastolla ja mukamas kieltäytynyt ostamasta uutta lankaa. Ja höpönlöpön! Jotenkin kummasti uusimpaan Visa-laskuuni oli ilmestynyt 160 euron edestä lankaostoksia! Puikot heilumaan, nainen!

Veera Välimäki has many intriguing pattern designs: for example Folded and Celery are on my own to-do-list. I even have the yarn for them. In fact, I feel a bit ashamed. I was supposed to be on a yarn fast and not to buy any more yarn. Get out of here! Somehow my latest credit card bill included yarn purchaces worth of 160 euros! Get your needles clinking, woman!

Huivi josta tulikin takki / A scarf that actually became a coat

Kaikki alkoi Clapotiksesta. Innostuin tuosta huivista alkuvuodesta 2008, kun löysin Knittyn, Ravelryn ja muut virtuaalisen neuleskenen ihmemaat. Clapotis oli jo tuolloin klassikko, mutta ajattelin 'parempi myöhään kuin ei milloinkaan' ja ryhdyin etsimään omaa versiotani varten täydellistä lankaa.

It all started with Clapotis. I got inspired by that scarf at the beginning of year 2008 when I encountered with Knitty, Ravelry and other wonderlands of the virtual knit scene. Clapotis was a classic already at that time, but I thought 'better late than never' and started to search for the perfect yarn for my own version.

Koska Clapotis kaipasi langakseen liukuvärjättyä lankaa, kuvaan astui mukaan merkillinen ja kiehtova japanilainen väri-ilotulituslanka Noro. Sitä ei saanut silloin Suomesta, mutta urheana tilasin omat keräni suoraan Japanista. Savun, farkun, levän, jaden ja metsän sävyissä välkkyvät kahdeksan silkki-villa-kerästä saapui, ja näin jo silmissäni upean huivini: pian se valmistuu käyttööni, kohta luon silmukat.

As Clapotis requests a variegated yarn, in entered the marvelous and intriguing colour explosion from Japan in the form of Noro. You could not buy Noro at that time in Finland, so I bravely ordered my own 8 skeins directly from the manufacturer. The moment my skeins arrived glittering in silk and wool in the shades of smoke, denim, algae, jade and forest, I saw my magnificient scarf in my mind. Soon I'll be able to wear it, I'll cast on in an instant.

Meni päivä, viikko, kuukausi, toinen ja kolmaskin. En tullut aloittaneeksi, tuli aina muuta neulottavaa. Kauniit ja hanakat Noro-keräni istuivat silkkipaperipesässään hiljaisina. Clapotis alkoi menettää viehätystään. Tuli uusia huivimalleja, tuli uusia, vieläkin kauniimpia lankoja.

A day passed, then a week, then a month, and another, and a third one. I never got into casting on, there was always something else to be knitted. My beautiful and eager Noro skeins sat in their silk paper nest quietly. Clapotis started to loose its charm. There were new scarf patterns around, and new, even more beautiful yarns. 

Sitten kuvaan tuli mukaan Jared Flood ja hänen Noro-huivinsa. Siinä se on! Noro täytyy raidoittaa, jotta sen väriloisto pääsee kunnolla oikeuksiinsa. Tarvitsen Noroa myös vastaväreissä, ja itse asiassa, voisin oikeastaan tarvita jonkinlaista villatakkia tai kietaisujakkua piristämään ikuista mustat-farkut-ja-musta-teepaita -univormuani.

Then came Jared Flood and his Noro scarf into the picture. That's it, I said! Noro needs to be paired with something in order to be lit in its full glory! I need a contrasting yarn and, actually, what I need is some sort of a wrap or cardigan to spice up my ever so black jeans-and-tee combo outfit. 

Jaredin inspiroimana aloin etsiä sopivaa ohjetta. Eipä onnistukaan, totesin pian, on pakko edetä oman pään mukaan. Onneksi olin Jaredin ohella 'keksinyt' myös Barbara G. Walkerin ja hänen ylhäältä alas -metodinsa. Tässä on täydellinen pari, tuumin, ja aloin laskea raglanlisäyksiä, helman pituuksia ja kaula-aukon leveyksiä. Kävin ostamassa helsinkiläisestä lankakaupasta lisää Noroa, tällä kertaa 9 kallisarvoista kerää liekehtivissä punaisen sävyissä. Loin silmukat Väriterapia-jakkuuni 30. syyskuuta 2009.

Inspired by Jared, I started to search for patterns. No luck there, I noticed, must make my own. Luckily,  along with Jared, I had also 'invented' Barbara G. Walker and her top-down method. What a perfect match, I thought, and started to calculate the raglan increases, hem lengths and collar widths. I went to a local yarn shop to by some more Noro and returned with 9 expensive skeins, this time in the shade of flaming red. I casted on for my Colour Therapy coat on the 30th September 2009.

Mutta niin siinä kävi taas, että jossakin juuri ennen helmaa ja hihoja, ihana jakkuni unohtui yhä uudestaan ja uudestaan Joensuun torilta ostamaani pärekoriin. Kuten ennenkin, aina tuli jotain muuta neulottavaa, nopeaa ja tarpeellista. Väriterapiani kurkki koristaan ja odotti. Ja odotti. Ja odotti.

But so it went again that at some phase, just before I would have finished the hem or the sleeves, my beautiful coat sat on the bottom of its dedicated shingle basket that I had bought from the Joensuu market for ever longer periods. As always, there was always something more important to be knitted, something quicker and more needed. My Colour Therapy peeked from its basket and waited. And waited. And waited.

Tänään jakkuni on vihdoin valmis. Kiitos viimeisestä puristuksesta kuuluu Ravelryn Lankalaatikko-ryhmälle, jossa innostuimme saattamaan UFOt maailmaan eli viimeistelemään keskeneräisiä projekteja maaliskuun aikana. Tänään on 28. maaliskuuta 2011. Pärikori on tyhjä. Norokerät ovat kadonneet. Ja minulla on takki, josta meinasi tulla huivi.

Today my coat is finally finished. The last push owes to the Lankalaatikko ('Yarn box') group at Ravelry. We had a group effort to finish our UFOs during March 2011. Today, it's March the 28th 2011. The shingle basket is empty. The Noro skeins are gone. And I have a coat that was just about to become a scarf.

Näen punaista / I see red

Surffasin taas kerran netissä sukkalankojen perässä ja jotenkin tuli apea olo. Kuulun ns. tiedostaviin kuluttajiin ja vaalin omia, eettisiä, ekologisia ja kansantaloudellisia ihanteitani myös lankaostoksilla. Tuotteen hinta on vain yksi tekijä omalla kriteerilistallani. Eläinperäisissä tuotteissa kuten maidossa, munissa, lihassa tai villalangassa ykkösenä on eläinten asiallinen kohtelu ja hyvä hoito. Heti perässä tulevat sellaiset seikat kuin se, minkälaiselle ja missä sijaitsevalle yritykselle euroni menevät ja tuotteen konsepti. Sitten alkavat vaikuttaa omat senhetkiset toiveeni: villalankojen kohdalla värit, langan koostumus, paksuus jne.

I was surfing on the net the other day to buy some sock yarn, and somehow got a bit dispirited. I am one of those so-called conscious consumers and tend to cherish my own, ethical, ecological, and economical values also whist yarn shopping. The price is only one criterion on my list. Pertaining to animal products such as milk, eggs, meat, or wool, I prize the quality of animal keeping and farm animal welfare the highest. The runner-ups are things like what kind of an enterprise benefits from my euros and where is it located, and the overall concept of the product. Only then my current wishes come into the picture. When speaking of wool, these issues relate to colours, yarn weight, fiber type etc. 

Mistä apea oloni johtui? No ihan yksinkertaisesti siitä, että Suomessa tehdään upeita, hienoja lankoja, mutta niiden ostaminen on hankalaa. Pitää liittyä lankaklubiin, pitää seurata päivitysblogeja, pitää lähettää sähköpostia, pitää kysellä, pitää jaksaa odottaa, pitää tehdä kompromisseja, pitää tietää mitä etsii ja mistä. Kauppamiehen taidot tuntuvat olevan tällä saralla aivan hukassa. Tuntuu siltä, kuin seisoisin keskellä toria lompakko pullollaan huutamassa: "myykää mulle lankaa!". Eikä kukaan myy. Supattavat vaan keskenään kojuissaan ja huokaavat, kun ei kauppa käy ja "voi, jos tuolle nyt ryhtyisimme myymään, niin mitä sitten tapahtuisi, voisi tulla toinen ja kolmaskin ostaja ja voi voi, rauhamme olisi mennyttä."

Why did I get so dispirited? Well, simply because I noticed that we have some excellent yarn and wool products and producers here in Finland, but buying them is really strenious. You have to join a yarn club, follow the updates from blogs, send emails, make phone calls, ask around, have the patience to wait, make compromises, know what and where to look for stuff. Business skills seem to be completely an unknown term in this sector. I feel as if I would be standing in the middle of a market square with my purce full of money and screaming: "please, sell my some yarn!!!". And nobody does. All they seem to do is to confab at their vendours' booths and sigh: "oh how bad the business is; oh no, now if we sell yarn to that woman over there, then what would happen next? There would be another buyer and then another, and, oh no, our peace and quiet would be eternally gone."

Onneksi olen jo kauan sitten löytänyt omat luottopajani: Petäjävedellä sijaitsevan Utunan ja Perniössä sijaitsevan Riihivillan. Kummankin putiikin tuotteet ylittävät kirkkaasti omat, mielestäni kohtuulliset laatuvaatimukset. Lisäksi vielä asiointi sujuu, värit ovat houkuttelevia, konseptit kirkkaita ja omaperäisiä.

Luckily I have long since located my trusted yarn shops: Utuna located in Petäjävesi, and Riihivilla located in Perniö. Both shops offer products that excell at fulfilling my humble requirements. In addition, shopping has been made easy; the colours are tempting; and the business concepts are cristal clear and idiosyncratic.

Pieleen mennyt nettiostosreissuni otti niin aivoon, että kaivoin lankakorista yhden vyyhdin Riihivillan punaista Ukkoa ja loin silmukat Judy Sumnerin kirjasta Knitted Socks East and West löytämääni Karate-mallin. Sekä langan väri että mallin nimi sopivat täsmällisesti fiiliksiini. Kiai!

I was so annoyed about my failed shopping experience that I dug a skein of Riihivilla's red Ukko sock yarn and casted on for a pair of Karate socks from Judy Sumner's book Knitted Socks East and West. Both the name of the pattern and the colour match my mood. Kiai!

Pertaining to the topic Embarrassing Confessions, I must report the following:

• although I'm on a yarn diet, I bought yarn for two pullovers (yes, not just one, but two precious bags), because the yarns in question were just so reallyreallyreally temptingly lovely;
• although I'm (still) on a yarn diet, I bought, in addition to the previous purchases (yes, you read it correctly, in addition), some more yarn because I'm just longing to weave and to strengthen my skills in that area, and I needed a matching yarn for the warp for weaving with the forgotten Handu's Silk and merino scarf yarn. 

Hyvin menee heikkoluontoisella. Eihän minun pitänyt ostaa yhtään lisää lankaa, ei viime kuussa, ei tässä kuussa, eikä koko keväänä. Lankaa on vaikka lampaat söis, sanoisi minun mummivainaani.

Weak minds go strong. I wasn't supposed to buy any yarn, not last month, not this month, nor during the whole spring term. There's enough yarn to feed the sheep, would my late granny say.

Mutta voi tätä langenneen nautinnon määrää! Tämä kultakasa on BC Garnin uutta silkkivillasekoitetta Sarah Tweediä, sävy on numero 27 Gold. Näppituntumalla lanka on hyvin laskeutuvaa, muttei aivan tunnottoman lötköä. Tiheydeksi näyttäisi tulevan 3.0 mm:n puikoilla jotain luokkaa 18 s / 10 cm. Sekä langan väri, loistokas kiilto että neulostekstuuri vie ajatukset renessanssiajalle. Skissailen langasta tunikaa, jossa olisi avara pääntie, pientä pussitusta hihoissa ja verkkoneulosta somisteena.

But I must say that the payoff of a succumb is a stellar fulfillment! This pile of gold is a silk-wool mix called Sarah Tweed by BC Garn in shade number 27 Gold. The first touch gives an impression that the yarn would yield to something with a good drape but not completely numb and limber. My swatch is telling that the gauge will be around 18 sts / 10 cm with needles no 3.0 mm. Both the shade, the regal lustrousness, and the texture induce to an association with the Renaissance.  I'm sketching a tunic that would have a scoop neckline, some sort of puff sleeves, and net stitch embellishements.

Toinen hankintani on sekin uutuuslankaa: Riveting by Kolláge Yarns. Lanka on tuotettu kierrätetyistä farkuista. Päädyin sävyyn 7901 Storm Denim, joka on juuri täsmälleen oikea kauhtunut ja haalistunut farkunsininen. Tästä haluan tehdä klassisen v-aukkoisen palmikkovillatakin. Lanka oli varsin kallista, joten mallin valinnassa pitää käyttää tavallista suurempaa harkintaa.

My other purchase is also a season's novelty: Riveting by Kolláge Yarns that has been produced of recycled blue jeans. My choice of shade was for number 7901 Storm Denim which is the exactly right shade of really old, faded and worndown blue jeans. My plan is to knit this into a classical, v-neck cabled cardigan. The yarn is quite expensive, so I need to be very careful with my pattern search.

On the road

Viikonlopuksi tuli äkkilähtö Lontooseen, kuopus pyrkii sinne opiskelemaan ja yliopiston kutsu haastatteluun ja portfolion esittelyyn tuli viikon varoitusajalla. Hän halusi minut mukaansa, joten räjäytin eläkesäästötilini, ostin vähemmän edulliset lentoliput ja nappasin mukaan työn alla olevan Circular Shrug -nutun. Neulon sitä jo varmaan yli vuoden 'marinoituneesta' Rowanin Kid Silk Haze -langasta.

I was on a hasty trip to London over the weekend. My youngest has applyed to a local university and they invited her to come over for an interview and to show her portfolio but gave only a week's notice. She wanted me with her, so I exploded my pension budget, bought the not-so-cheap flight tickets, and grabbed the Circular Shrug project with me; I knit it with Rowan's Kid Silk Haze that has been 'marinated' for over a year.

Nuttu oli hyvä matkaneule: kevyt kuljettaa ja helppotekoista kuin mikä. Ainoa ongelma oli langan väri. Tumma mustaherukan sävy imee kaiken valon, ja jos ei ollut tarkkana, 1o, 1n -pohjainen puolipatentti tuppasi menemään vähän väliä pois rytmistä.

The shrug was a really good on-the-road project: very light to carry and really easy to work on. The only problem came with the shade of the colour. The dark blackcurrant colour doesn't reflect any light, so I needed to be really careful not to mess up with the stitches even though the pattern is a simple k1p1 based mock ribbing.

Saa nähdä, mitä tästä tulee, oletettavasti kuitenkin jonkinlainen kepeä villatakki yöpaidan topin päällä pidettäväksi. Malli on mielenkiintoinen, taiteltava hässäkkä. Lankaa on yhteensä 3 kerää, 1,5 kerää on nyt käytetty, ja haluan nuttuun myös hihat. Toivottavasti lanka riittää.

Let's see what this project will turn into. I'm aiming at getting a light, soft and airy sort of a cardigan to be worn over the tank top of my pajamas. The pattern is interesting as it's basically a rectangular that will be folded into a garment. I have 3 balls of Kid Silk Haze, and a half has been already used, and I want to make sleeves as well. I just hope not to run out of yarn.

Lontoo oli ihanasti ennallaan. Kevät oli jo saapunut, ensimmäiset kukat ja linnunlaulu ilahduttivat ja piristivät. Shoppailla en ehtinyt, mitä nyt äkkiä kotimatkalla pistäydyimme valtavassa Westfieldin kauppakeskuksessa hakemassa uutta luettavaa. Foylesin kirjakauppa ei valitettavasti myy lehtiä, eikä Heathrown kolmosterminaalin WHSmithiltäkään saa neulelehtiä, joten ne jäivät ensi kertaan. Ja uskokaa tai älkää, Westfieldissä ei ole ainoatakaan lankakauppaa! Tällä reissulla oli kuitenkin tärkeintä olla hyvä, kannustava ja huolehtiva äiti, eikä niinkään tehokas neuleshoppaaja. Sen suhteen, miten yliopiston väki suhtautui lapsen cv:hen ja portfolioon, olimme vakuuttuneita, että minun lanka- ja neulelehtishoppailuuni tulee Lontoossa runsaasti uusia tilaisuuksia.

London was wonderful as always. The spring had already arrived there, the first spring flowers were blooming and the birds were singing which cheered me up a lot. I didn't have time to do any shopping, but on the way to our London home, we popped in the vast Westfield mega mall to grab some new books. Unfortunately, Foyles bookstore doesn't sell any magazines, and the WHSmith shop at Heathrow Terminal 3 doesn't carry any knitting magazines, so I had to leave that for the next visit. And believe it or not, Westfield does not have a single yarn shop! This time, however, my job was to be a good, supportive and encouraging mother rather than an efficient knitter-shopper. In terms of how the university reflected on my child's cv and portfolio, we were sure that there'll be plenty of opportunities for me to cover that area in London in the future.

Mitä opin eilen / What did I learn yesterday

1. "Älä koskaan pidä villaa kaulan ympärillä", toteaa ranskalainen näyttelijä Michèle Laroque Marie France -lehden uusimman numeron (février 2011) haastattelussa otsikolla Kauneuden salaisuudet. "Villa turmelee ihon. Kiedo kaulaasi sen sijaan puuvillaa tai silkkiä." Voi voi, Michèle-kulta, kokeilisit kietoutua tähän Honkarinteen suomenlampaan karitsanvillaan, josta neulomaani Terra-huivia olen kantanut jo toista viikkoa lähes yötä päivää ympärilläni. Ihoni näyttää kukoistavalta, ja uhraan mieluummin säkenöivän kauneuteni (hekoheko) kuin luovun tästä ihanuudesta.

1. "Never wear wool next to your skin", says Michèle Laroque, a French actress, in the Secrets of Beauty interview in the latest Marie France magazine. "It will ruin the skin. Slip yourself rather in a scarf made of silk or cotton." Oh, dear Michèle darling. You should try to wrap yourself into this Terra shawl I made from Honkarinne baby Finnsheep and which I have worn almost non-stop for nearly a fortnight now. My skin looks as lovely as ever, and I rather sacrifice my breathtaking beauty (haha!) than give up this luxury.

2. Älä jumitu lukemaan Ravelryn keskusteluja etenkin jos aiheena on sukat, sukkalanka ja sukkien käyttö. Tietäjiä tuntuu riittävän, oppisuuntia samaten, joten ei maksa vaivaa ottaa osaa keskusteluun, etenkin jos et ole ollenkaan vakuuttunut yhtään mistään universaalista hyvä-parempi-paras-hierarkiasta. Puoluerajat näyttäisivät nyt kulkevan paksulanka- ja ohutlankasukkaihmisten välillä; toinen jakolinja kulkee siinä, käytetäänkö villasukkaa paljaassa jalassa vai pitääkö välissä olla jonkinlainen puuvillasukka.

2. Don't get stuck in reading the Ravelry group discussions especially if the topic is socks, sock yarn, or how to use socks. There are currently so many wise guys around, and the same applies to schools-of-thought, so don't bother to share your thoughts especially if you are not convinced of the existence of any universal good-better-best-hierarchy. The demarcation line now seems to run between those who prefer thin sock yarn and those who prefer a thicker, worsted weight yarn. Another border runs at the burning question, whether you can use a knitted sock on a bare foot or should you use some sort of a cotton sock underneath. 


3. Neulo sukkia ja käytä niitä niin kuin tuntuu hyvältä, koska villasukat pitävät sinut lämpimänä. Tein uusimmat sukkani minulle uudesta Utunan Nutu-sukkalangasta ja niistä tuli superhyvät. Istuvuus on aivan nappi, väri on kaunis, syvä sammaleen tai havun vihreä, ja lanka on juuri sopivan paksua sekä neuloville käsilleni että jaloilleni.

3. Knit socks and use them as you like because woollen socks keep you warm. My latest pair is knitted from Utuna's Nutu sock yarn which was a new yarn for me. They turned out just perfect. The fit is spot on, the colour is a lovely, deep shade of moss or conifer green, and the yarn thickness is just right for both my knitting hands and my feet. 

Koska olet sen arvoinen / Because you're worth it

Teen parin viikon välein vapaaehtoistyötä, ja tänään oli niissä hommissa vaihteeksi vähän raskaammanpuoleinen aamupäivä. Koska tavallista itsehoitolääkettäni hyvää punaviiniä ei ollut oikein sopivaa alkaa siemailla keskellä kiireistä tiistaita, ajattelin kotimatkalla palkita itseäni joko langalla tai rahkapullalla.

Every fortnight I do some voluntary work. Today, my morning session was a bit heavier than usually. As I didn't have the chance nor the guts to use my normal self-help remedy, good red wine, I thought to reward myself with a nice sour cream bun or some yarn on the way home.

En ostanut rahkapullaa, enkä lankaakaan. Tein ruokaostokseni, muistin lankalakkoni, ajattelin järkevästi, hillitsin itseni urhoollisesti, ja köröttelin räntäsateessa bussilla kotiin. Mutta palkinto odotti kuin odottikin kotona. Posti oli tuonut sekä Judy Sumnerin kirjan Knitted Socks East and West että The Loopy Eweltä tilaamani sukkalangat. Kaadoin itselleni kupin kahvia ja suuntasin suoraa päätä sohvaan.

I didn't buy any yarn, nor the bun. I just did my groceries, remembered being on a yarn fast, I tried to be sensible, and I just took the bus home in the sleet. But I got my reward after all. The mail man had brought me both a sock pattern book by Judy Sumner, Knitted Socks East and West, and a package from The Loopy Ewe. I poured myself a cup of coffee and headed straight in the sofa.

Sumnerin kirja vaikuttaa ensi silmäyksellä aivan ihanalta. Tässä on kirja, jonka jokainen malli herättää innostusta. Mallien ideat ovat peräisin japanilaisesta neuleperinteestä, ja sen huomaa. Kuvat ovat tunnelmallisia, ohjeet selkeitä ja omaperäisiä, ja koko setti on tyylikäs, inspiroiva ja raikas. Haluan tehdä heti näistä jokaisen!

At the first glance, Sumner's book appears to be just wonderful. Here is a book in which every single pattern thrills you. The models are inspired by Japanese stitch tradition, and you can really see that. The images are full of dense atmosphere, the patterns are clear and unique, and the whole set is stylish, inspiring and fresh. I want to knit every pair from this book at once!

Kaksi uutta lankavyyhtiäni olivat nekin odotuksen arvoisia. Toinen langoista on The Sanguine Gryphonin kuuluisaa Bugga-luksuslankaa sävyssä Juniper Hairstreak. Toinen taas upeaa, Fleece Artistin valmistamaa, nailonvahvistettua Blueface Leicester -lampaan villasta kehrättyä sukkalankaa sävyssä Earth.

The two skeins of yarn were also worth waiting for. The other skein is esteemed and luxorious Bugga by The Sanguine Gryphon in shade Juniper Hairstreak. The other is by the Fleece Artist, the BFL sock in shade Earth.

Sokerina pohjalla oli The Loopy Ewen paketti. Kivasti pakattu, mukana pieni yllätyslahja ja lähetyslistan takana käsinkirjoitettu viesti: "Hei Anni, Kiitos kun tilasit meiltä, oli ilo saada asioida kanssasi. Nauti uusista hankinnoistasi; toivomme sinulle paljon neulomisaikaa tälle viikolle." Snif. Ja jep. Koska me kaikki olemme ihanien asioiden arvoisia.

Loopy Ewe's package was the cherry on the cake. It was nicely and carefully wrapped, included a little surprise gift and a handwritten note on the back of the invoice: "Hi Anni, We so appreciate your order. Thanks for doing business with us! Enjoy your new things; we hope you find lots of knitting time this week." Snif! And yes. Because every one of us are worth the wonderful things.
