Reissussa / On the road

Kävin loppuviikosta Tampereella tutkijakonferenssissa esittelemässä väitöskirjatutkimustani. Tampere on kiva, omaleimainen kaupunki, etenkin ainutlaatuisen hienon Finlaysonin alueen ansiosta.

Konferenssi oli ihan antoisa, mutta intohimoinen neuloja skippasi viimeisen luennon ja livahti ennen junan lähtöä vielä samoissa tiloissa, työväenmuseo Werstaassa sijaitsevaan Tekstiiliteollisuusmuseoon katselemaan muinaisia kinnasneulakintaita ja 1800-luvun lopulta peräisin olevaa Th:s Petersonin villakehruu- ja kutomatehtaan mallikaappia. Hauska sattuma oli bongata syksyllä 2009 pidetyn neulegraffitityöpajan tuotoksena syntynyt Silmukan taika - neulegraffiti Werstaan portinpielessä.

Kotimatkalla junassa oli ihanaa vain istua, juoda omenalimsaa ja neuloa Veronik Averyn suunnittelemaa Lace Ribbon Scarfia. Lanka on Handun Ahvenmaan huivilankaa sävyssä Munakoiso. Lanka on muinaisvillaa, harvinaista alkuperäisrotua, ohuenohutta, karkeaa ja mystistä, hienonhienoa ja kiehtovaa.  Päivänvalossa langan väri on vahvan violetti - tulossa on aika täydellinen joululahja anopille.

At the end of last week, I had a chance to visit Tampere as there was a research conference and I had a paper there about my PhD research. I like Tampere a lot: it's a city with a distinctive character of its own not just because of the unique, preserved and listed Finlayson industrial area.

The conference was okay, but, of course, a passionate knitter skipped the last lecture and sneaked into the Textile Industry Museum located conveniently at the conference venue, the Finnish Labour Museum Werstas. There, I admired for instance a pair of ancient mittens made with nalbinding (or is it knotless knitten how it's called in English...?) and a sample cabinet by Th:s Peterson's spinnery and weavery from the end of the 19th century. There was a pleasent coincidence to notice a huge knit graffiti that had been produced last autumn as a result of a special graffiti workshop at Werstas.

During the train trip home, I had a wonderful time to just enjoy an apple spritzer and knit the Lace Ribbon Scarf by Veronik Avery. The yarn is Åland Lace Yarn by Handu, the colourway is Eggplant. The yarn is made of original sheep breed from Åland Islands, it's ultra thin, coarse, fine, intriguing, challenging and mystical - all at the same time. In day light, the shade is strongly dark purple, so I'd say that this will be a perfect Christmas gift for my mother-in-law.

Kevättä, kevättä! / Spring, oh, spring!

Ihanan kevätsään ja pääsiäisen kunniaksi aloitin uuden sukkaprojektin heti kun edellisestä pääsin. Lankana on Handusta ostettu, Ilun käsinvärjäämä vahvistettu merinosukkalanka, värisävynä kevättunnelmiin mitä sopivin Kohdata ystävä kallehin.

To celebrate the wonderful, long waited spring weather and Easter, I started a new sock project right off. The nylon-enforced merino sock yarn is purchased from Handu, hand-dyed by Ilu, and the shade fits to my spring feelings most perfectly. 

Puikot ovat pienenpienet, 2.0 mm, ja malliksi valitsin Ravelryssakin suositun, itseraidottuvaan lankaan hauskasti vekittyvän Jaywalkerin by Grumperina. Kiva tehdä välillä jotain aivotonta, ilman omaa pähkäilyä, ihan ohjeen mukaan. Tunnelmallista pääsiäistä kaikille!

I chose my tiniest needles, 2.0 mm, and a popular pattern when it comes to Ravelry, Grumperina's Jaywalkers that will play nicely together with this self-striping yarn. Oh what fun it is to do something brainless for a change, to just follow the instructions without the need to figure out everything by myself. Happy Easter, everyone!

Sukkareseptiikkaa / Sock recipe development

Olen yritellyt kehitellä sukkareseptiä, jonka avulla voisin loihtia langasta kuin langasta omaan jalkaani istuvat sukat itselleni mieluisella kärkialoitus-työtavalla. Periaatteessa reseptini ei ole sen kummempi kuin NeoOfficen taulukkolaskentaohjelmalla väsätty pieni automaattilaskuri, joka laskee neuletiheyden arvoilla tarvittavat luvut kuten esim. silmukkamäärän, kantapään aloituskohdan ja kantapääkiilan leveyden.

I've tried to develop a sock recipe that would give me measurements for perfectly fitting socks with any yarn and with my favourite method, from the toe-up. Basically my recipe is nothing but a chart worked with NeoOffice and what it does is that it just counts me the stitches and rows required for the foot, the heel, its starting point ect. when I feed in my gauge.

Uudet testisukat syntyivät näin:
Lankana on taas kerran oma suosikkini Riihivillan Ukko luonnonharmaana, puikot 2,5 mm.
Sukat on neulottu 2 yhtä aikaa pyöröpuikoilla, kärjestä aloittaen.
Silmukoita on jalkaterässä 48 s, varressa 46 s. Tein kiilalevennyksiä 2x6 s joka 2. krs, tiimalasikantapään aloitin, kun sukan pituus on 12,5 cm, ja tein lyhennettyjä kerroksia kunnes vapaita silmukoita oli jäljellä enää 8 s.

The latest test socks were worked like this:

The yarn is again my favourite, Riihivilla's Ukko, this time in natural grey, needles 2,5 mm.

The socks have been knitted 2 at once on 2 circular needles from the toe up.

Stitch count on the foot 48 sts, on the cuff 46 sts. I did 2x6 sts gusset increases every 2nd row and started a short-row heel once I've worked 12,5 cm from the starting point. I worked the short rows in the heel until there were only 8 'live' stitches left.

Vielä on viilattavaa. Nämä sukat onnistuivat muuten oikein hyvin, mutta kantapäästä ei tullut aivan täydellinen. Kiinnittäkää huomiota tuohon löysään kohtaan, joka jää kantapään pohjalle kun ojennan nilkkaani. Ärsyttävää! Syy on varmaankin siinä, että tein kiilakantapäätä 'liian pitkälle'.

The recipe still needs revision. The socks came out perfect except for the heel. Pay attention to the loose corner at the bottom of the heel when I stretch my ancle. So annoying! It must be because hte short row heel was knitted too narrow, to only 8 sts. 

No joo, ars longa vita brevis, onhan pienikin edistys aina silti edistystä. Ensi kerralla sukista tulee aivan täydelliset, lupaan sen. Alla vielä pieni kaavio kärjestä ja palmikkokuviosta.

Oh well, ars longa vita brevis. Progress is nevertheless progress even when it's small. Next time it will be just perfect, I promise you. Below is a small chart of the cable and the toe (in Finnish).
